My drive home from the office takes me from a national highway onto a dual-carriage road, which snakes its way through the Cape Winelands (I know, it's tough living here). Anyway, the last "straight" out of town is about 4km long and a steady incline, I like to think of it as my home stretch. I have given many cars a hiding thanks to the 4-speed auto's long legs, and I've also received a couple of beatings myself.

On Wednesday as I pull off the highway I see about 5 Porsche 911's cruising up said road, with another 4 waiting to merge at a red light. As I pass them, I recognise a new 911 Carrera, the new 911 GT3 RS (blue decals & wheels), a yellow 911 GT2, and a white 930 Turbo. The last traffic light has two cars occupying both lanes, and I chose the left one. All 4 Porsche's sit next to me in the right lane, behind the other slowpoke. Light turns green, and my gamble doesn't pay off with the car in front of me holding me up. Hence the Carrera passes me, and I immediately indicate to change lanes. The GT3 RS driver was kind (or cruel) enough to let me in, and eventually the last remaining slow car moved over to let us go. At about 100km/h I floor my C280 and immediately the Carrera starts pulling away firmly (duhhh...), with the wing coming up a few seconds later. A safe distance behind me is a menacing GT3 RS waiting his turn with a GT2 harrasing him, but I bravely keep my foot in the carpet almost up to 3rd gear redline, and just over 170km/h.
The Carrera slacks off and changes lanes for a minute and I follow suit (a dozen or so carlengths behind), but GT3 RS man is still not biting. We hit some traffic almost at the top of the hill, and the Carrera takes off again. I tap my brakes to show that I have had enough, and finally the 3 remaining 911's open their taps. The GT3 RS was not very loud, but sounded beautiful nonetheless when it passed me. The GT2 must've been in a lower gear, because I got the full spectrum of that raspy flat-6 sound. Both were outdone by the old Turbo though, which severely rattled my fillings and made up the rear for a line of rapidly disappearing Porsches.

What an incredible experience, I wouldn't mind more hidings like that! Is it safe to assume that they were just toying with me? :D

Join the club Mr. Jones. I was lucky to enough to drive a 997 and I'am in love. If you think they LOOK fast try driving one, its nothing like i've ever driven before. Every 1K rpm its pulls harder and harder.

I did this a couple of years back. It is a good move if you have another "practical" car. I drive mine as often as I can, but, it mostly sits in the garage. :(

hahaha. My bro has had first dibs on that job for quite a while. I think he has put more miles on it this year than I have. All to keep the battery "charged up." heh. But yea, I always have a big smile on my face after a drive. :)

yeah they are...

The 993 has really held its value pretty well... If I'm going to spend that kind of money I may just spring for a first year 996, but then again, you don't get a 'true' air cooled Porsche

lots of P-car purists bitch and moan about the switchover to a water-cooled engine. however, you rarely hear them complain about the higher power output these motors produce.

:P Actually, I DID have my phone on camera mode, ready to film!
At the very second the Carrera took off, a friend of mine calls. So I put the phone down as I was more concerned with the immediate task at hand. And watching some of the videos I have made with it, you probably wouldn't have seen much anyway...
