One very beautiful machine!
The bonnet does not appear as long in the undisguised black SLR.
:)
btw, does the exhaust come out on both side of the SLR? (both left and right? or just the right side?)

Now... on the same topic of WHY???
Why is Mercedes expanding their line up into cars that will take away from the sales of its other models? Why the CEL?? Its between the S class and the E class, but why did MBZ think it necessary to have another car between these two?
What purpose does the SLR serve? SL55 looks similar, probably just as fast, etc.. SLK32 is the smaller version of the SL...we already have CLK55 which is the small sports coupe and the CL55 bi turbo which is the large sports car... Why the SLR?

Probably to satisfy the niche upscale market. Why would everyone want to own the same SL55 when you can cruise in a limited production SLR?

I would never complain given more choices. The SLR is suppose to be the better "Maranello" (turned out to be much much closer to Enzo instead), a car to show case Mercedes' partnership with McLaren and their ability to produce the best sports car in the world. (Mercedes only recently invested hundreds of millions into building a new McLaren facility/factory)
The car might look similar from the outside, and also running a similar engine to the SL55, but the true technological triumph about the SLR is what it is made of. The SLR uses five different carbonfibre varieties and aluminum alloy for the entire structure. Mercedes/McLaren even claim that the materials they used for the car to be more advanced than the MP4/18 F1 racer. The body rigidity of this car is 4-5 times more than any Mercedes passenger car now!!
From the numerous Euro car mags that I have read, this car will easily go from 0-60mph in under 3.8 second, a top speed of 210mph plus, and even beating the Porsche Carrera GT on the Nurburgring track. (all done with a 5 speed auto sourced from the Maybach)
For the truely stinking rich out there who has too much money to spare, this car is their prayer come true. This car defines the definition of a GT car. No car has ever combined this much insane power, track car ability with so much luxury and practicallity. (and no, I don't work for Mercedes ;) )
btw, just to answer my own previous question, you do get exhausts coming out on both sides :)

Oh, and when you have people lining up like lemmings to get an allocation spot for this car after you display it in concept form (1997). You build it! It makes all commercial and brand image enhancement sense :)
btw, Mercedes should have never built the FWD A-Class IMO.

greetingz,
Except for the German plates ("ours" had UK plates) it looked the same as the silver (pewter?) disguised SLR shown in these pics - maybe it's offered as an option...?

Mercedes is finally taking over again. AMG is making better engines each time and the SLR is simply what we needed to put Ferrarri etc, back in their place..

I know...I know...last time we (mike c200 and I) were at that section of the MB plant, Mike almost got thrown out because he made pictures of the disguised (not introduced back then) W209 CLK...so I figured we would leave the camer in the car now...not knowing MB would overwhelm us with loads of new cars...
