View Full Version : SLK230K vs. Z4 2.5

Sean (aka Perv) and I were out driving today...I was driving my SLK230K and Sean was driving his Z4 2.5...
We ran 2 time from a stop and I lost badly both times... :(
I don't know what the deal was...I've raced a Z4 2.5 before and we were dead even...I figured it would be the same when I ran with Sean since the specs of our car are very similar in-terms of horsepower, weight, etc...
Sean told me that he was "lauching" the car by keeping it at 2,000 RPM, in tiptronic mode and then taking off...
I was starting from idle, and since my car doesn't have tiptronic, i started from "drive"...
Does that make a significant difference? I attempted to do the same on our 3rd run but I forgot to switch out of 1st gear and my RPM went crazy... :o First time I did that and I'm never doing that again... :P ;)
So I need input from you guys...

When did perv get a z4?
Oh, and were the z4s you raced previously manuals? Most people just suck at shifting.

Chip and pully for the SLK!
I thought you could put your SLK in to a manual shift mode?

2001+ ;)
nah, i don't want to do any engine mods...i'll just stick to the cosmetic mods...i was just surprised by the Z4's performance...
I even checked the 0-60 times claimed by the mfgs.
BMW claims 7.2s and MB claims 7.1s...
So, I dunno...must be the Sean's driving technique...but winning is winning...whether it's by an inch or a mile...where's Bobbo with the Fast and Furious pic? lol

7.1 v 7.2... ok your not going to see a huge win, if any at all. With that miniscule of an advantage, driver error is going to count for a lot more than that.

Perv also weighs 10 lbs. That could've been the deciding factor ;)

lmao...honestly, i did think about that...LOL
time to hit the gym...lmao
phil, u are correct...and my SLK also has the same hp
karan does your SLK go down to gear 1? Like you have D and then 3, 2, 1?
Also, to get a better luanch with an auto, you have to brake torque.
While in D, or 1, Put your foot on the brake. Hold the brake down while depressing the gas pedal. Wait till your RPM's go to around 2000 and then let of the brake and floor that sucker.
Dont do this to often though as till will induce excess wear on your torque convertor!..
those damn BMW's.... :P

those numbers are with hard hard launches. do what rana said ^
edit: and take out your spare tire and use a 1/4 tank of gas

You can try the brake torque technique, but when it comes down to it, I think it's probably due to differences in the shift patterns - perhpas the MB has a lazier mapping? Are you sure you weren't in "W" mode? :P

Like you said man, just stick with cosmetic mods ;)
Karan...I understand your decision to stick with cosmetic mods...but cmon man, atleast get a chip if you dont want to physically upgrade the engine.
You gotta have some go to back up that show! BTW, I still want to hear your remus exhaust.

Rana: I did put my car in "1" and did the "torque" technique...i did notice a difference but as i already mentioned...i totally forgot to switch the gear...so the car just rev'd up like mad...hit the red line made some crazy noises...arrrg...."vrooom...pop...pop...pop"...i was like, no!!!
I've also thought about a chip and done some research...SLK'ers say the chip does nothing for the SLK...I think it's because the S/C is not electronically controlled, or something? Correct me if I'm wrong...
The pulley upgrade does help a lot though...adds something like 20 to 25 hp...
I drive fast but I don't usually race, that's why I don't really care for spending money on engine mods...actually the only time I've been racing is when I drive around with Sean...lol...need to stop doing that...
Next car I get is gonna be fast out the box...haha M3? :o :P ;)
I still want another "go" with the Z4 though... :P

The Z4 will be the sports car the SLK never will be. Let's face it, the Z4 was designed to be a driver's car, as are most BMW's. Surely a Z4 isn't a car for a 60+ Asian woman...

But you have the 18" wheels too right karan? more unspring weight too, so that might be a factor. and the z4 had what 16's?
