Couldn't figure out if this question should be here, the gallery forum, the lounge forum, or other... Mod, please move if deem this is in the wrong place.

Ok, question. Why blur the license plates in our pictures?

I've taken the time to do it, but recently got lazy and published a lot of pix to my gallery w/o doing it. While watching a reality TV show recently, I even noticed the VAN that was carting the people around had its plate blurred in the video.

I've been wondering and just can't figure what could occur. Just like the VIN on the car, a plate is right out there for all to see. So what can be the consequences of not blurring the license plates in our pictures? :dntknw:

I think it's a casual protection kind of thing...just makes it more of a hassle to link a driver and their exploits to a car. Sure, there's this thing called the phone book, that may have your name number and even address in it, but you don't post it everywhere now do you?

Yah I think it's for casual protection. Besides that, I know a lot of people are doing it just because other people are doing it.. You know that saying, hey since everyone's doing it, there must be a reason for it and I might as well follow...

Also, how about those sites where you can do a reverse license plate look up? Supposely, you can get someone's address (or even more info??) just by using the plate#. Personally, I've never tried those sites since it requires a fee and I quit stalking people couples year ago :P But I've always wondered if those site can really do that...?

I post the same pics on a local forum, so I blot out my plate because: A) I drive like a mad man at times; and B) If I list my mods, posting a pic of my car with it's plate showing is a dumb idea. It's like a shopping list for thieves.

May sound a bit far fetched, but, shit happens!

good question..i do it because other ppl do it...but in my area no w202 is like mine (not that mine is all that, its just that its differnt)...so without even looking at the licence plate they can tell that this car is my car..so why go through the hassle of blurring the plate out....that said i will continue blurring the plater because it adds a sence of anonimity and a lil sence of security....weird..yes..but thats just me :)

on reality shows it's to protect the people in the show because they're seen by everyone all over the world on TV.

I've almost never bother to blur out my plate because people already see it on the road. what's the point blocking it out.

People in the business (such as myself) can get a lot of info from the plate alone - I can get owners name address, driver's license, driving history, accidents, tickets, insurance carreir, other cars you own, etc. With that info I can track down your real property owned, real property sold and bought, chain of ownership of your house, how much you paid for it, etc... iternet and access to DMV data banks is a very powerful tool, so it more than a mere slight safety issue - its downright dangerous, especially if you piss someone off and they start publishing all your stats on a public forum.
