View Full Version : SLK Owners: Have any of you swapped your 'Cheese Grater' for an SL grille?

If so, did you buy an R129 grille and remodel it to fit, or did you buy one from 'for my mercedes' I ask as my father is considering an SL grille ;)
Thanks! :)

I think the sport grille is much better..., but if your father insists on the SL grille, all your options can be found on

Call Jerry, he shipps internationaly!

Here were my iterations and impressions. First, the cheese grater looks okay ... and if you wanna paint it silver it brightens up the look. Perfomance in terms of cooling sucks.
First aftermarket option, SL style:

Pros: BEST airflow. Easy to install. Cleans up the look of the front end and makes it look more "Mercedes like".
Cons: VERY brittle material. If it survives shipping you should be okay. Finish is a little rough and it definetly needs to be painted even if you leave it black. Supply your own star.
Second aftermarket option, CLK OEM grille:

Pros: Super easy install if you buy the already modded version from Jerry ... bolts right on. Increased airflow over stock but not quite as good as SL style. Very clean and finished look. Really the cats ass in terms of aesthetic appeal. Comes with star. Mercedes quality part.
Cons: Doesn't quite fit PERFECTLY in the lower outboard corners. Other SLK owners run into surrounding objects trying to get a look at, and generally rubbernecking your grille.

How about a silver grille a la BRABUS ?

it is similar to the "sport" style grille that comes on 230, but it is brighter silver and it is alum not painted plastic....

Thank you VERY MUCH for the pictures Kuhl, I will show my dad! :D I know Jerry ships internatioanlly, but, it is a pain in the butt for us, not to mention EXPENSIVE too! As it was, the windscreen was INCREDIBLY lucky to avoid severe damage, you should have seen the condition of the box! Not to mention the big ass hole in it
I suggested he just get his grille painted, but that might not be as easy as it sounds, his car being a Designo color and local spray painters being IDIOTS! Living in Australia really SUCKS for modifying Euro cars! :( I'll let ya'll know what he decides :)

You're welcome Bob. You knew I wouldn't leave you hangin' ;) . If the paint shops by you suck, have them paint the grill a complimentary color like Pauls silver or like the titanium on my SL style, instead of trying to match his body color.
Silver will generally pick up the silver in the wheels.
