Noooo...i didn't take my own advice about staying with camera systems...i sold/returned my Nikon stuff and bought a Canon 30D. I've switched to the dark side...high quality low light images are too important for me.

Dark side? I like to consider it the better side
Now that the initial hurdle of switching has been accomplished, now comes the hard part...getting glass :p

Woo hoo! I've got a Canon 10D and am looking to upgrade to a 30D sometime this year! Welcome to the canon fam!

Alrighty, so my canon 30D came in today and I have to say it's a piece of work compared to the Nikon d70 I had. Alot more sturdy, heavy the 2.5 inch lcd is amazing too. Cranked up the iso to 800 and images were still smooth, 1600 is still reaally good too whereas on my nikon things would already be looking grim.
Ok as far as lense, currently I only have a 28mm F1.8 USM which i think is actually not sharp at any aperatures for some reason for a $420 prime. Really good colours and contrast though, but like a tank as well, but maybe i got a bad copy? Can anyone recommend some good "classic" canon lenses that are known and proven to be good? I decided against getting both 35 f/2 and 50 f/1.8 together for a cheaper price than my 28mmf1.8 because the non-usm designs felt really cheap and light. But from reading more and more reviews, it seems like the cheaper built non-usm 35 f/2 is alot sharper.
what kind of lenses do you guys have in your canon bags?

Test your 28mm 1,8 at F4 and see if it's sharp...should be tack sharp. Most lenses don't perform well wide open, with exception of the "L"s and "ED"s. But make sure when you are testing you are on a tripod.
What might help is placing nails in foam at different distances. Focus on each nail and check for accuracy. If you keep missing each nail, then your camera might be back-focusing or the opposite. SOmetimes this happens and you need to exchange the body.
As for sharp primes, the 35mm F2 and original metal-mount 50mm 1,8 are always in demand.
If you really want a sharp prime for all-around use, save up for the 35mm 1,4 L. Now THAT is a beauty.
Team that up with the 85mm 1,8 and 200mm 2,8 and you are all set for prime action.
Of course, you can be done with it all with the 16-35mm 2,8 and 70-200 2,8 (IS if you can swing it). Add a 1,4 extender and you have all the range you need with minimal hardware.
But primes still kick ass.

Screw primes :) Just kidding...
I have a 24mm f/2.8 and its equally as sharp as my 50mm f/1.8. I would highly recommend the 50mm. If you don't like the build quailty of the 1.8, get the 1.4.
Personally, I don't use primes as much as I thought I would. If you really slow down, focus on composition, then primes are the way to go. But if you are shooting motorsports, or action stuff where you don't have too much time to compose your shot, primes can be very limiting.
Another lens worth every penny is the 70-200. Both f/4 and 2.8 versions are awesome... and now you can compromise between the two with the f/4 IS. But on the cropped sensor, I feel like 70mm is a bit on the long side. I feel like I'm almost to the point where I want to sell all my lenses and just get a 24-105 :) Now THATS some crazy range!! Theres also the 35-350mm with even more range.
I agree with Kam, the 200mm f/2.8 is sweeeet!!

don't worry about the lenses too much. imho, it's not the gear list that sets the photo but the skills. check babycarlssons pics.
BUT the primes/L lenses are faster, optically better and expensive as heck.
here's a good link if you have time to read more about canon stuff.
