So how are these different from shoe mount flashes?

Everything is manual on it, but it's not too hard to figure out exposure, it seems very powerful for it being so old, more so than my 580ex. It's called a "Popular 3800", my girlfriend's father gave it to me and said he bought in the late 80's. has bounce, front flash plus main flash unit, you could move the head left and right, it's looks pretty pro. Is there a special way to use these type of flashes and whats the difference between these and shoe mounted ones? (cause I can't really tell the difference in my pics, though i haven't done any real world shooting with this old flash yet) .

Thanks for any info guys. :)

Damn, i found out that old flashes like this can fry my camera's electronics over time because it has a higher triggering voltage. I'm not gonna use it anymore although it did take very well exposed pics, ever better than the 580ex suprisingly.

Set your 580EX to slave mode and you have a really nice off-camera setup!
