View Full Version : Bought a 5D (test pics)

bought a 5D in the meantime with a 35mm f/2, 50mm f/1.4 and a 85mm f/1.8. If the worst comes, I'll sell it all back later, but i just wanted something to work with for now. I'm not too impressed by it and can't see why it commands a $1500 premium over the 30D.
here's some test pics:

Nice shots....the 35mm F2 is my favorite lens aside from the series 1 50mm 1.8. Two "bargain" pieces of glass that are fantastic buys.
Anything specific you didn't like about the 5D? I was planning on selling my 1Ds to get it instead. Some of my friends switched from a 1Ds to the 5D and prefer the colors/noise pattern from it. Aside from the build and control layout advantage of the 1Ds, the 5D is supposed to be far better performing. I definitely know it's much better in battery performance...that's for sure.
Until the competition steps up and builds a FF body to compete against Canon, that premium really is what Canon can "get away with" if you want FF....because the 1Ds MKII will be far more expensive. I 100% agree...the cost of it sucks a$$. But $7k+ for the 1Ds MKII sucks bigger a$$ :(
Kodak 14x not included as competition of course....

It's a good camera definately, I kind of bought it for the 12mp's as well because I wanted to take some studio portraits of our family and enlarge them, place them around the house.
Dynamic range is better then the 30D (i would have to tweak alot in photoshop with the 30D, but the 5D has nicer out of camera photos, plus high iso performance is a given), it's solid, makes a more quiet shutter noise, love the shallower dof at all given aperatures versus a crop camera, the natural light fall out in the corners gives photos a neat natural vignetting...and that's about it.
It does, for some reason overexpose by a lot. I'm starting to like it more, i was just iffy about it because I didn't know if I'd have enough time to enjoy it haha

lol.. keep your head up brah. i'm sure you'll get significant time off for good behavior.

I want the 5D, but on the other hand, you have to look at what is supposed to come in the following year, year and a half. The 40D is supposed to be released sometime this fall. Since, like you've said, there is no entry-level FF competition, it will most likely not be FF. But it should use DIGIC III image processor I think, which will make an appearance on a FF camera such as the 1Ds MKIII I'm guessing, and eventually within a year of that release, trickle down to the 5D MK II or whatever they want to call it. If thats the case, then I'll be more than happy to forego the price premium and pick up a used 5D :D Although I'm sure DIGIC III will be awesome, with more 35mm film qualities in regards to light handling and ability to capture a wider dynamic range.
One of the reasons why I would want a 5D vs a 1-series body is its compact size. However, your most likely going to be shooting with a grip anyhow, so how much smaller does it end up being??
Golden- The camera shouldn't be overexposing like that. Check your metering mode.

That is another reason i'd wanna switch to a 5D as well. I'm finding that when i want FF shots, i'm really out somewhere where speed is less critical as well as ergonomics. And if it means losing the extra ergonomics of the grip in favor of a lighter and more compact camera, then that'd be great. I wish they made the 5D kind of like an EOS 1V without the grip so it'd be consistent with the 1 series, but maybe just maybe that'd come eventually. It's not too convenient working with two control layouts at times.
When i read about the 40D, I was bummed it won't be FF. I'm OK with the camera not being any faster, for the sake of having FF at a lower price. Looks like we'll have to wait a while longer.
With that said, the 5D is plenty faster than a series 1 1Ds!!! And noise suppression....no contest. 5D alllll the way.

yeah, another thing that took me by suprise is that the 5D's rendering is so film like. With the 30D I'd have to apply several filters to achieve the look but shots straight out of the 5D don't need much at all.

it's ok tp, i can explain. The camera is something that I'm passing the time with, I have to keep busy with something right now or else I'd go mad with boredom. Starting community college on the 22nd as well. To be honest, to fund for this camera, I'm going to sell the old one and its lense when I get it back, plus I've recycled 500lbs of old copper wire from my dad's work...and it's worth $3 a lbs ;)
Low light performance is pretty awesome...

That's right, I forgot you had a 10D. I have one too...and yeah...they really took a dive in resale. But it's still a sweet camera and the fact it can be broken down to a small light DSLR is still valuable.
Might be good to keep it in case you plan on experimenting with rig shots....at least if it bites the dust it won't be too bad of a loss. I almost lost my D30 (that's right y'all...the "D" comes BEFORE the 30) several times experimenting. Probably wouldn't do that with a 5D :p

That is a good point about FF....because you are no longer using the optical center which is usually the sweet spot of a lens, a FF body will reveal a lot about any lens deficiencies...especially with edge sharpness and light fall-off. ALso with the ultra-high resolving power of the Canon FF bodies, paired with the ability to zoom in 100% with PS, lenses have to be designed to their highest levels of quality ever.
After going FF, I now can see my "trusty" 17-35mm 2.8L I used since 1994 is not really as sharp edge-to-edge wide open. On film it looked fine, and still looked good with a 1.3 crop. But FF really tore it up. Now I can see why Canon has "revised" some lens designs...especially with the 16-35mm 2.8L II. I think any new Canon lens after 2005 will have had the new design considerations in place prior to manufacture.

Kam- Luckily light fall off is an easy fix in photoshop. Sharpness corner to corner is not so much, however in CS3 the sharpening tools are much much better. I suppose you need to ask yourself if these are problems that are worth $1,000+ dollars for newer versions. I really considered the 16-35 f/2.8 L II along with the 17-40, etc but in the end, I honestly couldn't tell the difference between those lenses and the Tokina 12-24 @ 16mm that I ended up getting for $480.00. Plus on a cropped body, 12mm is around 16-ish FF. I really want to put my 12mm on a FF body and see what sort of results I get. I have the fever to go wide!!

Yeah, I agree with Kam, I was talking to a friend about buying the 5D with cheap lenses, and he says honestly, alot of canons lenses aren't designed for digital, espescially the older ef primes. That's why I can't wait to try the 24-70 on my 5D if i have a chance to, I'd like to see how L performs on the 5D. If the older ef lenses are already making me drool, i wonder how colours would come out on a pro lense. Suprisingly, I like light fall-off, it's looks pretty cool, but I guess I'm not use to it because i'm so used to the 30D.
Anyways...more shots haha

don't get me wrong, I love light fall off as well, especially if its natural. EF-S lenses are designed for APS-C sensors (cropped), however I thought since 35mm and FF were equiv, that there wouldn't be this much degration in performance.

True that...but I'm curious to see how the new digic III and 14bit sensor will handle the images. Do you think they'd be 5d quality except with less megapixels? But regardless, FF, in my opinion, gives pictures more of that 3d/big dof look when shooting at big aperatures.

oh dude, they annouced the D300 too! Back then I was planning to get either the 30D or the D200, I loved the D200's build, but high iso performance sucked and the fact they use Sony sensors turned me off, so I went with Canon. I'm really curious to see how these new nikons perform, espeically with new non-Sony cmos sensors, i'm overwhelmed with these new camera announcements! Can't wait for the comparisons.

08-23-2007, 12:31 PM
Yeah...saw the D300 as well. For real, this is quite the year for new cameras.
But it makes me wonder just what else is up Canon's sleeve. I wouldn't be suprised they are just holding back waiting to see what the competition does. Historically they've been at the leading edge. Now that Nikon has finally stepped into the FF fray....I really really really hope a Canon FF DSLR will break the $2K barrier in the near future.
