Hi guys. I have designed a really cool set-up for my sound system in my trunk...I am planning on building the system myself but I don't know how to measure the size of the box to the speaker? I'm really, really bad when it comes to ICE's :( So, is there a certian way that a box has to be build to work correct? cuz I don't want plain square looking boxes in their...
Thanks guys,
Albert S.

Albert, the box is EVERYTHING. If you don't design the box properly, it will sound like garbage. Every sub has its own particular needs as far as volume is concerned. Theoretically, the shape is arbitrary, as long as the correct volume is achieved. Of course, it would be considerably more difficult to accurately estimate and precisely build a random, curvy fiberglass blob that will ultimately displace the exact volume you want than it would to simply build a box. We're talking about rudimentary multiplication (L x W x D) versus complex quadratic functions to calculate areas under non uniform curves (I can't even imagine the headaches). In general, you have more room for error if you are building a sealed box. Ported enclosures are a little more finicky, and you also have to design the port correctly (diameter, length, etc.). Again, a slot port is easier than a round one, as it is easier to control dimensions. Finally, a bandpass box is extremely unforgiving in terms of miscalculation. Even a minor error will result in an unexpected sound characteristic or, worse, speaker damage. If you're going to build it yourself, you should really do some research. I have some links somewhere if you're serious about doing this right. If I were you, I'd at the very least consult a professional. Car audio is 20% hardware, 80% installation.

each sub needs particular air space IN the box for it to work right...the manufacturer of the sub should supply you with that info, also, it will differ if you plan on making it Ported, they should give you that info to, such as, where to place the port, how large(diameter) and how for down INTO the box it goes...
as far as the box itself....the airspace is measured and calculating like this....
Inside Width inches(wall 2 wall) X Inside Depth inches(wall 2 wall) X Inside Height inches(Base 2 Top)
Divided by: 1728
this gives you Cubic Feet, the airspace for the sub...

Albert, here's a great link to get you started.

It doesn't have to cost $10k, unless you're building a competition setup. The most important thing is to find an installer who knows what he's doing. Are you most concerned with sound quality, sound pressure level, or aesthetics?
When you're ready, I can hook you up with my guy. Whatever specific flavor of bass you desire (tight, punchy, boomy, deep, f'in LOUD, etc.), he will deliver.

Albert,
Did you ever see my custom set up in the W124? Email me if you are interested in specs and pictures. I had all of this up on bnzsport at one time, but since all data has been lost, I have not uploaded any pictures since.

I am VERY interested in any/all W124 pictures; while I do NOT plan to compete
(all about the low-pro'), I nonetheless want an uncompromised, tight-as-f'k setup!
Send any/all images to: nemo@nemonis.net
Thank you,

lol:D foo I'm still broke and the car is still for sale, but I'm working at my Dads/Bro's Cabinet design place, and MDF and anything else towards wood is almost free :D So, I have decided to do a custom, show quality design in my car, but I hadn't really thought abt the subs' spacing and all (since I don't know Jack abt ICE's). But now tht I do...I have to see what speaker I'm ganna put...then talk to my local system shop that set up my 4 remote door poppers (Traffic Jams). and see what they recomend. Then I'll set up all the MDF, fiberglass, leather if any, and finaly maby some yellow Carbon Kevlar ;) (who know's:p ).
If you guys know of any other thing that I might or should consider, feel more than free to cuss me out while you can :D
BTW, Where can I get empty NOS tanks from? Dothey sell them at different sizes? I need something that can be connected latter on....
Thanks a lot guys for allllllll your help...
