Well, my long-block is finally back together and ready to install. So it shouldn’t be too much longer till I’m up and running again. Talk about suffering from the “I can’t wait” syndrome! I added some new pics and information on rebuilding process to the website. Check it out at:

http://www.turbobenz.com/Rebuild.htm

You may have seen a few of the first pictures to come up, the new stuff is further down the page.

Jason-

Congrads bro! The motor looks hot as hell. What HP are you shooting for?

The site is great! Awesome way to provide information. I am sure all of us appreciate your openness with the project!

I soon may be trying to challenge you for that "fastest I4 MB" title! I'm starting with a Lysholm conversion, FP regulator, injectors, and flashed ECU. Yes, it's the KLEEMANN Lysholm prototype that is not moving forward. Internals would be next!

Congrads again, awesome!

The HKS turbo you have (basically a reworked Garrett T-25) is capable of making 250hp at full boost. Add that to your car's 150, and we are talking about 400hp! Of course you would need to build up transmission to handle it, and beef up other things too but you get the idea. You are half-way there with the beefed up internals, you may as well shoot for the "world's fastest four cylinder Mercedes" title!

UP – Thanks for the kudos. As far as being the fastest… we’ll see once it’s running, broken in, and fine- tuned. However, I would not be surprised if there was someone out there (perhaps MB themselves), who have some radical setup that would smoke my a$$. I’m thinking that I will be putting down at least 320 @ the wheels at 15psi. I am concerned about the tranny, and was unfortunately unable to find anything that could be done to really beef it up, or even at least turn off the “learning” feature (and put it into the sport mode at all times). Hopefully it will hold together (fingers crossed). :(

Nukblazi – Cool, I love competition:D Not to mention, that we may be able to learn from each other to better both cars, even though you have the new C. I would love to have your car… it sounds sweet. If mine had a stick like yours, I think I’d be in heaven. ;)

Brabus – The polishing guy’s name is Virgil Hobbs (503)-777-7102. He’s an old coot who works out of his garage, but I think the quality of his work speaks for itself. Plus his prices are unbelievable.

Jason-

Absolutely- I had been considering the turbo conversion, however, for what I want the car to do, I want what I have to be there at all times. A boost controler could have resolved the issue, but my car would have been classed in the worst possible class for an I4 MB... :)

Cripes... we might have to make sure we park next to each other at the national shows!!! :D

The new C. I love it. I really do. But I have to admit. All I really want to do is build a purpose built 16v 190E with the Cosworth head as a track car! Ohhhhh yeah!

Another option I had considered was converting the car to N/A. You can get a lot of HP out of a 2.3 done right.

Again congrads... Mad respect for all the work you've done. I'M NEXT!

Why not make a 5 speed manual using a Chevy transmission? I think thats what all the hot rodders do. Just need to custom fab a part or two to get it to fit the engine, but its suppossed to be a strong transmission whichever is the kind commonly used. A guy I know did this to his single-turbo 750hp Supra (converting it from auto to manual).

I dont know much about this, but know its commonly done. I think the Jeep guys do it too. My friends Supra worked great with it....

If your staying under 400HP why not just swap in the 5 speed SLK manny? Or the 6 speed from the newer models?

Hehe... "Chevy Inside"

I am fairly confident that a tranny swap in a one-off application would be very complex (particularly going from auto to manual) and extremely costly. In a popular application like a Supra, I’d bet there are adapters and parts (like drive-shaft, pedal assemblies etc.) that have already been developed. In my case it would all be custom & trial and error (as is everything I have done). Therefore, I think the cost could get out of hand real quick.

I have been involved with the 4X4 scene for many years. I recently sold my veeeerrrryy sweet locked and loaded 73 CJ 5 trail machine. Even the prefab kits for tranny swaps from places like Advanced Adapters are not cheap at all (considering what they include), and require a pretty big install effort.

For now, I’ll stick with the stock auto and keep my fingers crossed. I heard varying opinions, the majority of which think it will be able to handle the power (except that it has 107000 miles on it). I guess I will find out… as always ;)

If I do blow it, you can bet I’ll start more seriously considering different options.

I just found out about a local outfit that custom builds awesome specialty torque converters. I'm going to be talking to them tomorrow to see if they might be able to modify my converter to a higher stall.

They are going to be doing one for my dads new project (a 500 HP 68 Mustang).

Keep ya posted.
