I priced a new piece of console wood from Rusty and then decided to call Heritage Wood Works (.com). They quoted me $130 to make the wood brand new with no cracks in the lacquer and no fading. I got the wood and my ashtray (sent for color match) back and was blown away at how gorgeous the wood looked-better than new!

Wow... let's see some finished pictures!!
How come you didn't just go with buying something OEM?

The vendor who supplied MB in the 80's with their console wood used the technology of the day: lacquer. It fades and cracks from vibration and heat. Today restoring wood is far superior. They don't use lacquer but a very fine urethane coating which remains clear and doesn't crack. I still have my o.e. console wood but zebrano never looked so good! P.
