View Full Version : Would it be wise to run 'Sport Springs' with OEM shocks?

Say if I lowered my ML, would it be wise to change the factory shocks or could I leave it be
You see, I only need rear srpings, the front end of the car is 'adjusted' (I can never remember the exact place/term) by a dealership or a suspension place (if they have the right tool).
Just wondering is all. Can anyone shed some light on this
Thanks :)

When I drop my C-class I left the stock shocks and after a year then I replaced them with Bilstein sport shocks.
And thanks Doc... ;)

I would just leave it stock after lowering untill you see or feel anything you don't like...then change them. It should wear your shocks out more quickly if the vehicle is lowered though. If it ain't broke (yet), don't fix it.

I would NEVER risk blowing out my OEM/stock shocks on a tightened/slammed suspension... ESPECIALLY at the speeds at which I drive.
To each, his/her own... but I HIGHLY encourage you to mod your suspension ALL AT ONCE, for safety's sake...

i dropped the Mini-ML an inch and a half and left it on stock shocks. its a conservative drop though. if you go with a conservative drop you can get away with leaving the stock shocks on and replace them when they go out. by the way whats it feel like when shocks die? and also i dunno the differences between lowering a car and lowering an SUV...it might be different for the ML.

You'll blow out the OEM shocks pretty quick. I would just change them all...

Well, ok. We can see how much money we have after looking at this thread. ;) Of course, if you got boat loads of money sitting around, change EVERYTHING AT ONCE. But of course we all know that's not how it works. Modding takes lots of time, and most of that time is waiting on money to get into the pocket.
--So, of course if you have the money at the time, change out the shocks as well, but I still say the stock shocks will buy you about 5 months if you need it. (This is about how long mine lasted after lowering springs were installed with the OEM shocks in place)
--MB300E87--You will know your stock shocks are worn out when you notice more and more "bouncing" in the ride quality. If you have big wheels and tires, you will probably start rubbing on all the dips and bumps in the road. Also, you will see you ride height diminishing, but this is a bad kind of lowering. The sport shocks are made to function at a lower ride height and the throw, or return, is shorter eliminating your rubbing in most cases. However your ride quality will be that much more stiff.

Scotty, I have less money than you do :P I was gonna do springs only and shocks later, but a few souls saw me in me demise and gave a helping hand, like a good neighbor, you know ;)

It's cheaper in the long run to do the shocks and the springs ate the same time. You can do both at once and save yourself install time and cost.
I did both at the same time.

It's too low for my taste. I'm going to order a set of AMG Eurospec springs when I have the money.
I'll be selling the Eibach prokit I got. Used for about a month so far. It fits 1996-2000 C280 and C36. (same part numbers on the eibach site)

While researching my options, I called a few local tyre (tire) shops......
Me: "G'Day Mate, would you guys have 295/40/20 tyres in stock for a 4WD, if so, how much would it cost?"
Shop: " Oh geez, no mate. We've never sold a tyre that big before, I can probably get them in for you though"
Me: "Ok then. So how much for the tyres"
Shop: (after a few minutes on hold) "$500 a piece"
Me: "Not bad I guess. How much for fitting, balancing, and all of that"
Shop: "We wouldn't be able to fit them here our machine isn't big enough, but I could give you the name of someone"
Me: "That's alright, just after a price right now. Thanks for your time mate, I appreciate it"
Shop: "No worries mate"
 :o  :D  :P

It doesnt matter that much. 'Bounce' the front & rear of your ML & count how many times it goes up & down. If it only moves once then your shocks are still good for safetys sake. If the ML goes up & down like 3 or four times then get shocks. I drove an ML 320 as a loaner & was impressed w/ the grip of the AWD & I thought it was a safe feeling truck at speed except for the body roll. Some Koni's set on 3 clicks should get rid of that! If you wanna bounce alot & limit body roll go w/some Bilstiens or Koni's. I love hearing the 'ole rumor that aftermarket springs will wear out shocks. Driving over crappy roads is what wears out cheap shocks. Koni has lifetime warranty on shocks & maybe Bilstien does to?

I know this thread is pretty old, but...
I'm thinking the same thing; getting Eurospec AMG springs. Do you know exactly how much lower they are then the US spec springs? (my car's a '98, if that's different than the '97)
Thanx
