View Full Version : Why Does My Car Stop???

My car would stop randomly(gas...usually at the half or more. Just last weekend, my engine just completely shut off when the gauge read b/w the 3/4 and 1/2 mark, on the freeway! This happened to me about 3-4 times, mostly on the freeway! Battery and spark plugs fine (just replaced), can't think of anything else other than the fuel senders/pumps or sensors, or the management. My car has 130,000 miles. And i know its not the fuel gauge, b/c when I put gas in it, I pay the correct amount that fills the tank full. And I would calculate the mileage (divide miles by gall. used). I did that once, because it is random, its hard to be accurate, and takes a long time to just do this alone. When I'm anticipating the engine to shut off it doesnt, and when I dont, it does. When I put some gasoline (1+ gall.) it starts again! It is getting annoying. The European Shop I bring it to, never heard of this problem and doesn't know why it does this. Any suggesstions? I have a 96 C220 btw.

Could be an electrical problem with your fuel pump, at least, that was the case on my 380SEC
I had a (local) mechanic change the pump, and all was good :)

Moving to 'Engine Tuning' ;)

This happened to me before in my 300TE but I fixed by changing the fuel pump relay. My mechanic told me it was either the fuel pump seizing up or the relay to it. We went ahead and tested the car. He started it up and let it ran untill it stalled. When it did he put two wires where the relay was, connected the two together and we heard the fuel pump working. So aleast for me it was My fuel pump relay. Bought a new one for 90 dollars from a friend in the dealerships parts department. Hope this helps

Obtw: You dont have to keep putting in gas to get it started you have to wait for the relay to cool cause it gets hot and stops working.
