Over two years before its official presentation at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, a first prototype of the new Mercedes S-class, code-named W 221, has been spotted undergoing tests in northern Sweden.

According to a Mercedes spokesman, the new flagship won't grow overall in length or width but will feature a lengthened wheelbase with the front and rear wheels pushed further to the edges of the arches.

The new S-class will feature a design quite different from the current car. In fact, design elements of the up-coming GST, which itself will be based on the chassis of the new S-class, will be carried over to the new S-class, too. The car will be given a prominent waist line underneath the side windows, reaching from the bonnet straight through to the boot lid - a simple trick to disguise the true height of the boot without destroying the overall elegance. The front will be dominated by a very flat and wide grille.

It is too early still to give concrete information about chassis and electronic - however, air suspension and huge 19- or 20-inch wheels will be standard

man im sure it will take some time before i even see that thing, not to mention sit in it...but i do agree with 19s and 20s...cause i look at the S class now and its huge and rolling on 16s. it just looks ugly to me..but this is beutiful, way better than the bmw 7 series

Me too...it's nice but looks like a refreshed version of the w220...no dramatic change [exterior-wise]...:)

last i heard this was just a photoshop..

i'd hate to see that front end on the new S-class.. those holes just make no sense.

then again we saw the W211 way way early and we thought it was a photoshopping.. and it turned out exactly like that.

yeah what are those holes under the lights? and the lights in the back look the same as the 03 S-Classs just less slits.

Way 2 soon, but all and all the Pic looks nice I love the grill.

I hear the new 2005 S class will have fingerprint analysis devices instead of keys? It will recognize the user and change the settings of the car to the users set preference, such as seat position, radio stations, etc.

trunk looks sorta like a BMW 7-Series....i like teh old W220 better!!! But stilll the W221 trunk and taillights look better then the BMW 7

Shopping together a 7-series and current S-Class do not get you a new S-Class, just an ugly non-existing car. :beard:

The side mirrors are EXACTLY like the W220, so obviously it is a chop..they'd never redo all the sheetmetal and leave the mirrors the same...

no body molding makes it look like a jap car

if you cover the front headlights and nose on the first picture, the side and rear look like a 2000 accord coupe.........

i hope the w221 looks better then this when it comes out.....
