Hey guys, I remember from pictures of the benzsport autofest meet, I can't remember who all did it, or maybe it was from another GTG. But some of you guys had put some sort of tape all over the front end of your car to stop rock chips during the long drive.

I'm going to MD this weekend and its quite a drive, and I don't want the 500E to be all chipped up by the time I get there and back considering the whole front end was repainted.

What kind of tape are you putting on the front of the car? Anyone have pictures of what I'm talking about? And does it leave any stickyness on the car? Thanks!

the careful way to go about it would be:

1 layer of low-adhesion masking tape

1 layer of blue masking tape aka "racers tape"

1. layer of duct tape

Leaves minimal residue which can be taken off with light application of goo gone

the simple way to go would be:

1 layer of blue masking tape

all can be found at the hardware store, and don't forget to take some with you for patch ups along your trip.

...how sticky is the blue masking tape if applied directly to the paint?

Forget the blue... make you own style :)

A 2" thick roll costs about $7-8.

there's less residue to clean up if you use the low adhesion tape,

goo gone doesn't hurt as long as you're very light with it (use a cotton T-shirt, little to no pressure) and wax/seal the car afterwards.

Also, it helps in removal if it's a warm day...

More or less. The blue painters tape leaves no residue - great stuff!! :D

I used the blue painters tape (As seen on TV's Trading Spaces ;)) 2 weeks ago for a camping trip involving gravel roads and it worked like a charm. Painters tape will not harm the car finish as the adhesive is weak enough to not pull latex paint off a wall, thus a car finish which is more durable is no prob. Goo Gone or Goof Off is ok on the finish if you do not leave it on...use it, clean off the adhesive and rinse with water right away..

Hope that helps...thanks Luwin for the pics of yours for the idea :)

I'll probably tape them a little bit too

What I run on the track is a latex based product that you paint on. This you can paint on any area and it forms a rubber glue type bond. Feels like rubber glue.Wont' come off and when you are ready to take it off you just use a bucket of warm to hot water and it comes off.. you have to be careful and not put it inside little cracks etc.. fenders etc.. are no problem.. I just looked outside for a name and I came up empty.. try a search on internet.. works great for rock chips and you have leave it on as it is a cloudy milky color. YOu can peel some of it off with you hand when ready to remove. The guy that sells it has ads in Excellence Magazine, Borders etc.. has that .. Dan

everybody shaking their head and laughing at doc's car that morning with the massive amounts of blue tape hahhahha. classic.

blue tape left no residue that i could find. if you lay down a layer of white auto masking tape underneath the blue it works well too.

apply from the top and bottom of the bumper first and then work your way overlapping each strip until you meet the middle. This way the wind won't rip your tape off.

henry, did you put anything under the blue tape? like any other layers like the white auto masking tape people are talking about.

And when i go to home depot what do i ask for? I can't just ask for blue tape, is the technical term for it blue painters tape?

ZorroAMG

At home depot, go to the paint section and ask for masking tape, th blue is one color, there is green and beige too....use the green or blue cause regular beige masking tape is too sticky...

Alright guys I went to home depot and got 3M blue masking tape. I spent an hour taping up the front end before i left and it worked BEAUTIFULLY.

The tape stayed on the whole ride, didn't give me any problems. Nor did it give me any problems coming off. It peeled right off without leaving ANY residue at all.

I have some pictures of it before i left, i'll post them when i get back in town. I'm gonna tape her for the ride back too. You'll see how many f'in bugs were on it ;)

thanks guys!
