Woo hoo..it was a coil end underneath the coil pack. #2 cylinder was misfiring. Looked like #3 was about to go too but #1 coil end was good. I replaced all three and 6 plugs. Car runs like a champ now :)

Yup, Those coil ends are a pain in the ass. I have heard many stories about people spending a couple hundred bucks on new coils, only to discover the the 10 dollar coil ends were the problem. I keep a couple around as well as some spare plugs just to be safe. If you car is missing on 2, 4, or 6 that is the first thing to check. Oh and don't run platinum plugs! The gods at mercedesshop warned me, but I tried them anyways, needless to say I am going back to bosch supers this weekend.

Yeah..supposidly the coil and wires hsould never need changing.
I'll try to post apic up of the offending coil ends. If you want to check the coil ends, pop the coil off and there's a rubber end. It's long about 4-5 inches. Look in the end of the coil end where the coil inserts intot he spark plug. If there is a reddish rust like substance in that end..you will need to change it.

Rocky,
Are you talking about the spark plug wires that connect to the coils?
I replaced my spark plug wires with Magnecor KV85 comp wires. They are soooo much better than stock and considered by many to be the best plug wires available.
Well worth the money, about $160 set of 16.

Not the wires....thje coil is 2 pieces. The top square part is what you see. If you pull the ocoil out..there's a 'root' part. That pasrt is the coil end that connects the coil with the spark plugs.
BTW, nothing beats the OEM wires set, they should never go bad because it's 100% copper, or something like that..read that in the mercedesshop forum.

I am not sure what the offical test for coils is, but the sure way would be good oil fashion trial and error. Replace the #2 pack with one of the old coils, drive the car, see if it makes a difference. Repeat for the others.

If it makes you feel better I once got suckered into replacing all of the coils. Unfortunately I did not keep the old coils.

Look in the end of the coil end..the part thaty attaches to the plug...if there is reddish stuff, looks like rust..it's a sign that the coil end is busted.
As well..on the older m104's there was a blue marking or something on the coil packs...those are bad and defective just like the wiring harness was.
