View Full Version : 210 Eclass with 20", a question for W420

Newbie, here, hello to all!
I am thinking of replacing my current car (96 GS300) with a M/B E430 late next year.
I would like to fit 20s on my car and a H&R Cup kit with #1 Fr pad, and #2 Rr pad (to keep the car "raked" when I install a subwoofer box).
I have seen pics of your car on the TWS site, and someone from M/B world referred me here to you, I would like to ask a few questions.
1. How low is your car?
2. What did you do to allow the 20s to work with a drop? (details please)
3. If I run a 8.5" rim all around with a 245/35-20 Toyo T1-S (slimmest overall sidewall) would be easier than the 9.5 Brabus you had? (or still have)
I really do not want to slam the car in the weeds, I just want a 1.75-2" drop and some nice 20" wheels, along with some other tweaks.
Please feel free to answer these questions in detail, as you seem to be one of the only people who has done it. (if I am wrong, any other 210 owners with 20s please chime in!)

i think he spent of whole lot $$$$ to flare out the front fender for 20s. . . or was it to fit 9.5s in the front. I could be wrong but i think if you get 8.5 in the front there might not be problem. I've seen another 210 with 20s so maybe its posiible with out any modifying.
Welcome to the forum Aristo.
Note that H&R Cup Kit will give you a soft ride so if you are after stiff rides then you'll probably be disappointed with it. If I remember correctly (not too sure), Turbo][ had cup-kit installed and was not too happy cuz it was too soft for his taste.
1. How low? I had H&R Sport with half coil cut in the front and rear is uncut (I have a subwoofer box as well). It is not slammed and tucked to the lip but there's no finger gap. That's low enough for me because I already have rubbing problems taking turns.
2. As you noticed, I'm using a really agressive offset of 9.5 for the front so there is more work to it. 20MM spacer was used to clear the control arm and F50 Calipers (I could have used 10MM spacer and have less rubbing problem if I went with (A) Brabus Monoblock VI (Its curvy spokes have more clearance to the caliper)/Brembo combo, or (B) Monoblock 3 (FLAT Dish design has no clearance to caliper)/STOCK brake combo, but I chose to do it the hard way). Due to the spacer the tire stick out too much and won't clear the fender and front bumper, so both fenders need to be flared (basically cut and replaced with PC of metal, or fiberglass or carbon fiber) and bumper needs to be modified and flared out as well (basically heated out and add more figerglass). You are looking at about $1,500 to do this, and of course could costs more or less than this depending on your relationship with bodyshop.
3. 8.5" is definitely easier than 9.5. 8" would be even better and you won't need to do as many mods to get them to fit. I've never attempted 8.5" myself but I know my shop had tried it (TWS). They would fit "ok" with 5 to 10MM spacer (again, to clear control arm) but you won't be able to turn too much because the wheels will hit the front bumper and rubs against the front fender. If you don't lower your car at all then you prob won't have this problem, but as you know impossible not to lower a car with dubs on it.
You would NOT have problem for the rear with 20x9.5 / 275 Tires.
I've heard people shaving the control arm. Yah if it works for them fine... But PERSONALLY I think it's a crazy thing to do for a "daily driver" to weaken that part and put your life in danger if you happen to hit something on the road.
At last, I don't believe your car will be 100% "free of rubbing" with DUBS. You will have problem taking fast corners on bumpy roads, so you need to slow down on corners and twisties.
Whether you go with 8 or 8.5, I suggest you to just flare out the fenders and modify the bumper.
And of course, if you get a W211 E-Class then DUBS will fit just fine you don't really have to do anything other than rolling the fenders.
And 714guy is right I spent whole lot of money on it because I did it TWO TIMES!! :(

W420, thanks for the insight!! To be totally honest, I like the 430, because it is rare to see it modded! Most go for the GS or 5series, it is even more rare to see one with 20s on it modded PROPERLY, ie, not sitting 2.5ft off the ground.
If the Cup kit gives a soft ride, that is perfectly fine by me, in fact a 2" drop with a soft ride is like having your cake and eating it too (sporty look, grandpa ride!)
If I can, I think I will do a 8" or 8.5" up front with a 245, and then a 255or265 out back. FYI some tires have a much slimmer sidewall design than others and may be more conducive to mounted on a 210. Toyo T1-S vs Nitto 555 is a good example.
In a perfect world, I want to buy the wheels, the suspension components, and have my bumper trimmed/fenders rolled and drive off into the sunset! Can a fender be flared to a moderate degree to avoid cutting/extensive painting?
Could you please post some pics of your ride, the ones at TWS are partial shots from bad angles!

Any pic of the car sitting still, full shot, most have that C class blocking the shot!

Aristo - Yup I agree 430 is nice ride. 98+ 320 is also good choice! Whatever you do, just make sure to stay away from 420 because affordable performance mods for the the older engine is almost non existent.
As far as tires with slimmer sidewall design, yup I'm planning to experiment with other brands when I get a chance. I'm rolling with Pirelli P-Zero now, and I don't really like Nitto 555 because they seem to get noisier with age. I might try the T1-S or I've also heard that Dunlop SP9000s have thinner walls.
Fender can be rolled without re-painting, but you would most likely need extensive modification to fender and repaint running lowered W210's on DUBS. You need the wheels to clear the inner knuckle (10MM SPACER), clear the fender and bumper. You MIGHT get away with 8" width & CUP kit height (try it), but 8.5" and up I don't think it'll work. My shop tried 8.5" before with spacer on a half coil cut H&R W210 (not my car) and the wheels would hit the bumper.

Will-thanks for the insight man, the 320s are cool, but i really want something with some step out performance. My current car has decent pickup, but I'm tired of just DECENT. I want to be able to be a TRUE left lane whooligan. Just point and shoot type power!
BTW-if there is better looking 210 on 20s, I would love to see it!
:werd:
I think you may be the only one with a drop!

Wouldnt it just be alot easier to do 19's. Especially if you want to keep some of the performance, Those big heavy wheels will really slow you down.

05-31-2003, 10:24 AM
Craig, you are right, it would be easier to do 19s, but to be honest, that is one of the reasons I want the car. I asked for anyone on 2 M/B boards to post pics of a E class with 20s, both boards turned up ONE car!! Had I said, post pics of your 210 with 19s, I would have about 200+ pics!!
I think that with the right size rim, tire and drop, I would be able to fit 20s without so much hassle, I am willing to invest some extra $$$ for a proper fittiment.
Will-I think the sport drop would be better than the Cup kit, for rubbing purposes, since it is higher, and your car looks damn good as it is. What spring pads are you running, and how does it ride?
Why am I not getting the email notification when people reply to this thread? I have that feature selected in my profile.
Aristo, I'm running #1 pads all around. The ride is a little harsher than the time I was running 19s, but it's actually not too bad and I have no compliant with it for daily driving.. Comfortable-wise, of course it cannot compare to cars like Lexus ES300 with stock suspension, but it's still hella more comfortable than cars like Porsche.
The E-MAIL notification is turned off on the forum. That's the way it is from day 1. Sorry about that.

Thanks Will, I spoke to Sander on Sunday (or Saturday, cant remember), and he said that for the most part its better to stick with 19s. He said that there is a $$$ layout, and driveability trade off in doing such a conversion that may be hard to swallow!! To be honest, I could not imagine buying a clean, Starmarked 430, then having the fenders painted!!!
Anyway, thank you for answering my niggling questions (I'm a detail oriented person), drive safely and post new pics whenever you want!
BTW- I drive a 96 GS300 with Intrax/KYB 1.8" lowered suspension and 255/35-20 tires, so I know about a somewhat "knobbly" ride. I took my 20s off to sell them, and MAN does the car ride like a dream now!
Aristo, yup Sander is right.. 20's sure look good but not sure if it's worth all the trade offs (especially driveability)! There is another w210 around L.A. area that look very similar to mine with same wheels, and I just found out that 2 weeks ago he swapped them out with 19"s now. haha
Hey, you got pics of your GS handy? I would love to see some pics of your current ride. If you don't have them readily available then don't worry about it. :)
Whatever you decide to do, pls keep us posted on the forum! :)

Will sorry about not posting, my feelings were hurt once my "20" dreams" were crushed. I have since reverted back to Lexus, but who knows, I change my mind more than everyone on this board combined probably!!
I dont see a way to attach pics so I will just post a link to my cardomain page. My current wheels are kinda ghetto fabulous which is why they are for sale! I cant wait to get back to my clean 5spoke look (got my eye on some Volks 20"chrome)!!:werd:

Doesn't VOLK HATE big chrome wheels? I thought that was against their company philosophy.

I should not have said chrome, thats just what they look like, Volk uses a process called Muscle Mirror Finish, or MMF, which is actually a very high polished appearance, but it is NOT plated. Good call. Actually I looked on the website but could not find them, they are called Volk Genome Exon
Nice Aristo... Looks like you took really good care of it. Can't tell it's 96 at all as everything looks so clean!
Wow those wheels are pretty crazy. heheh. Yup I think 5 spoke Volks will be nice replacement!

Thanks Will, I am a member of ClubLexus and cruising that site made me HATE my wheels!! But thats what happens when you have a relocation package check in your bank account, and you need to replace the 20s you sold for 1300 bucks, YOU ACT IN HASTE!!
To be honest, I took the ghetto wheels off, and I actually like the car better with the drop and 16" factory chrome, at least its clean and classy, not garish!
You should put your car on cardomain BTW!

Toyo's site give info on the 245/35R20 tested on an 8.5" rim so your good there, one thing, the 245/35R20 it 1.5 inches taller then the original 235/45R17.

Wow.. Nice!! Much much better than the last set. Good job! :D
Now I think you need some cross drilled rotors & painted calipers (can't really tell if you have them already from the pics) then you will be straight pimping. :D Thanks for sharing the pics.

hey will, how did the bridgestone S03s turn out? you mentioned that you were about to have them put on... i liked the S03s, but they did not last long at all.... not even 6 months..... again with our 'tire' problem....
Brandon, the tires are here (for a while already) but I've been unbelieveably busy and didn't have time to put them on yet. I'm still going to be busy this weekend so my plan is put them on next weekend. I think Sander is about to kill me. :D
I am gonna defintely keep an eye on the wear and compare with the Pirrelis and I'll keep you posted about this!

Hey Aristo.. How's it going. Actually few things went wrong with my car.. Nothing major but enough to really get on my nerve, which is the reason why I got the BMW as daily driver now instead of waiting until next year (original plan). :)
