Hi Guys. Quick Question: Does the shifter console illuminate? When I drive at night, all other gauges and panels are lit, except the shifter console. I can shift into park, or drive by feel, but its a bit strange and can be quite annoying at times. I would have thought that when I turn on the headlamps, all else is illuminated. Perhaps it is a bulb issue. Not sure..
Thanks

mine doesn't in my 91 w124, but my dad's does in his 95 R129. It even illuminates the selected gear brighter.

Yes, I had this problem, but it corrected itself. It is suppose to illuminate when you have the lights on (parking or headlights). But, I don't even look anymore, I just know what gear i'm in by the number of shifts down or up.
It fixed itself....I think it was just a loose wire or bulb. What happened was when I shifted out of a gear, it would turn off, then if i smacked the knob or shifted into another gear, it would turn back on. Now, its fine again.
Try looking underneath and make sure the wires are all connected, or could be the bulb burnt out.

Umm Tinman yours should illuminate. You have to get in there and change the bulb. My guess is the C220 should also illuminate

How difficult is it to pull that console off and change the bulb or look at wiring.. "Dumb guy, pseudo-mechanical enthusiast.."

To change a single $0.65 bulb? Man, there's a bridge I'd like to talk to you about buying . . .:D
Pretty much all center console lighting is "user" serviceable with simple hand tools. Wouldn't hurt to have the maintenance manual, which is substantially less than $150.

Thanks to all who replied as well as the quick reference by MTI. I know my ignorance is without question noticeable, but I do inevitably learn through countless beatings. :)
I will put a bid on a maintenance manual on eBay and try not to destroy the console in the process..lol
Thanks guys again.
