last night my car misfired for some reason. i turn the key all the way, and the car has a slight jolt and doesnt start. i try it again and it starts up with no problem ... about two hours later while im driving, my check engine light comes on  i noticed when the car is off and i turn the key twice(with all dash lights on) there is a couple clicks and then an electronic buzzing sound coming from somewhere to right of the engine...i hear this with my hood open, but with the hood down, i cant really hear it. is it supposed to be like that or is there something wrong? MAS perhaps? i gotta admit...before the misfire, i was kinda being hard on my car, but i wasnt pushing it that hard..and it was only for about 20 minutes. does anyone have an idea on what it could be? i have a 1999 c230 kompressor... anyone know where i can go to get a free or cheap diagnostic test? the sounds r coming from the circled area...

someone help me please....

Without trying to be funny, if your engine actually cranks - perhaps you should check the fuel level. The gauge might be wrong.

go to www.importec.com (http://www.importec.com) I got my MAS there for my C36 (god bless her soul) for around 240 or 269 shipped i think. Not really bad at all.

Check the sender mechanism (it sends fuel info to the main computer). I've read several posts about this issue.
If there's a good Merc mechanic around go and find out what to fix before it gets much worse! And then maybe your extended warranty would cover it?

Not to be rude or anything...just being blunt here...

Get the engine codes pulled. No use doing an italian tune up on a merc cause it'll cost you an arm and a leg.

The fault could be MAS, Coil Ends, O2 sensor etc..lotsa possibilities.

Pull the codes and report back and then we can start to diagnose.

Just had my 2000 430 clk in the dealership for the check engine light and what the mechanic told me it is either the Air Mass Sensor or the O2 sensor. What you are describing is the Air Mass Sensor, the dealership price was $290 plus $180 to install.

$180 install?!?! cant u replace the maf sensor in the matter of minutes????

hey tully how much did they charge you to pull codes??

I thought $180 was a bit much, it basically broke down to $90 to pull the codes and $90 to install.

It is a scam to charge $90 to pull the codes because the check engine light can mean only 3 things; Air Mass Flow, O2 sensor, or gas cap not fitting properly.

Nahh..could be more then that...

Had a CEL for :

a warped head
Coil Ends

The CEL will basically come on for emissions sake. Like Fuel rail and stuff.

what does the MAF sensor and the 02 sensor do?? those of u who have had MAF sensor problems, did the diagnostics give u a 02 sensor code too, even tho there was nothing wrong with it?

It's a scam yes, but CEL can be triggered by much more than those 3 things :)

I wonder if it is different from model to model. I was told by the dealership that on a CLK it is only those 3 things, basically emission control sensors.

All OBD II vehicles have the same codes plus few manufacturers' codes. The three is probably the most common causes, but there are tons of codes that can trigger the CEL. :)

Maybe that is why they charge $90 to tell you what is wrong.;)

If you saw the diagnostic book with all the coeds..it'll make your head spin hehehe

Remember, just cause the codes tell you one thin..doesn;t mean that it's the problem.

IE. CEL came on, car goes into LIMP mode. Pull codes. It says soemthing to the tune of misfiring in a bank or soemthing. That's all it said. Turnes out to be a $10 part which is the coil ends. If you didn;t know specifically what's a common problem on the car..the mech would have changed the coil pcks, the wires, the plugs and the ends and would have billed ya hundreds of bucks.

Best thing to do is to do research.

Try www.mercedesshop.com (http://www.mercedesshop.com), they have a very very good tech forum.

i was told a bad MAF sensor would give me bad gas mileage....but my car seems to be running as it always has??

So will a bad O2 or under inflated tires. I noticed my mileage increase cause I had a 5 year old fuel filter, when I replaced it with a new one, car ran smoother and mileage decreased.

Just get the codes pulled. Do it ASAP cause abad MAS or bad O2 can cause cat coverter to be plugged up and don't even ask how much a new cat is. $3500K CDN for a C36.
