Hey yo

I researched this on club202. ThreePointSix has done it. Taking off the resonator on amg Exhaust and welding in straight pipe. Now has anyone done this on C43 or a V8? Does it sound good? Im sure it does but is it maybe too loud?

TIA

i'm gonna sound like an idiot saying this but....

i think i've heard a C43 with "straight pipes" (according to the owner) so i don't think there was a resonator. it sounded scary lets put it that way. it sounds really good and otherworldly coming from a mercedes. other drivers were staring as it pulled away up the road roaring like mad.

i could see though how some people would really hate their car sounding like that.

'interior droning' on V8s

to me, with a V8, instead of straight-piping, you might as well simply replace the current resonator with a high-flow sport resonator. That way you'll get inproved flow and sound, but not completely uncontrolled of either.

I am not so sure what to do, on a C36 its one thing on a V8 well i dont want it sounding like a camaro, but some burlyness isnt bad! A German Hot Rod!

Jnolte: Check out the photos here:http://www.club202.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=567

I removed my C43 system back to the stock cats and then put in a large dual 2.5" in and out muffler and then dual pipes to the rear ofthe car.

Sounds pretty good really with only slight resonece at 2000rpm and a wicked V8 sound at higher revs. Not camero-ish, more like that Porche Cayanne in the TV commerial.

For what it is worth, I have a 99 E55 AMG, and had remover the resonator off my car and put straight pipes, here is what I found:

It sounded just a little more manly (deeper throttle)
It bugged down the car at low RPMs (take off)
It felt just as fast on the top end.
Track numbers were about 1 tenth slower, my 60' times were slower by 1 tenth

I don't know on your engine, but it is worth to try this 200 bucks mod.

pocholin, those are pretty good numbers... how do they compare with other E55??

Hmmm that is bad to hear pocholin, i dont see how a resonator getting taken off can make the car lose HP. The resonator is just a restricting heavy "muffler" on the exhuast system. hmmmm now i mut do more reasarch!!!!

I belive I'm among the fastest stock E55s with 80k miles in the odometer at the same time :D :D

Well, the resonator is not exactly a straight pipe, and I'm thinking that when I replaced my resonator with straight pipe I removed some back pressure therefore I lost some low RPM HP.

It was kind of funny to feel the car awake after 3500 rpm, to explain the difference more, when I removed the resonator I couldn't spin the tires, once I put it back I was able to spin tires, both at take off.

When I put my exhaust system on it took something like 500 miles for the computer to figure out what the hell happened. Then it was like "wow" very much quicker.

In my current state of tune my car will light up the rear wheels at 25mph when I punch it (WFO) and the tranny shifts down to 1st. Pretty cool.

I want to get my car to the Drag strip to get some numbers. I think it could be pretty close to a E55 right now. Loosing those 250 lbs from the car did not hurt either.

Well I had the straight pipes for more than 5000 miles, and the computer never liked them :(

This mod on a baby V6 combined with Sebrings definitely sounds seeeweeet and definitely gives it more needed power. Not too loud and has a mild high pitch sound amongst the deep grunt, sort of like its turbo charged. I did it last weekend (actually I'm not sure if it was the mid-muffler or the resonator or whether they're same thing :stupid: ). Whatever it was, with the new breathe of life, I look forward to driving my car everyday!

The beauty is, it only set me back US$104 (but I'm not in the US :P ).

JNOLTE,

There are alot more in the exhaust than simply replacing one part with another. But if you are to replace your OEM cats with the high flow cats, you will need some high flow resonator instead of straight pipes, since these 'free flowing' cats ARE LOUD. Are you replacing the muffler too?

Replace and move your 2nd set of cats about a foot further. You'll be surprised!

That would require cutting the pipes and I really didn't want to do that, but I'll think about it.
When I did the straight pipes I had them done where they were bolt ons, so going back to the resonator was only a matter of swaping it back on.

Yes it is safe for the engine, and you can have it done at any muffler shop. The dealer won't ever do something like that.

That's why we build everything with flanges. "BOLT ON APPLICATION" :D

Hmm i did not know this, So maybe i should just get a whole new exhuast system? Hmmm How much would some new hi flow cats and a new resonator for the cats be? COuld i just use the stock AMG muffler or would i need to up grade that too?
