Yes, that's right, I just had my first Touge Battle. My '85 190E 2.3 8v with an Auto tranny (!!) VS SLK 230 Kompressor. The result: 190E..... wins!!!!!
Here's the story:
Coming up Mulholland. I had come down earlier with a hardcore racing friend who was not at all impressed with my performance. So I was working hard on improving my time.
I reach the Coldwater section, and have to slow down due to traffic. I continue to the Mulholland turnoff. I pull in behind a silver SLK230 Kompressor. I think to myself "damn, there goes my run. I'm stuck behind this guy...."
before I can finish the thought, the light changes, and the SLK is off like a rocket! I slam on the gas in 2nd and rocket off after him. He's going faster than I ever have taken the corners.
But I think to myself "I can't let this guy get away. Let's show him what an old 190 can do!" And I accellerate after him. I'm close behind him, as we corner at 10-15 MPH over the limit. But he can't get away from me.
My 190 rolls to sickening anglesas we corner. The only thing allowing me to stay in control is my racing wheel. But the 190 is keeping up with it's young relative.
Finally, we reach a hard corner, one with a 15MPH limit. We're doing 35. We slam around the corner, and suddenly, as I acellerate, I feel something odd....
The rear wheels lose grip. The 190 is not exactly sideways, but it, for a glorious moment, is drifting. We round the corner, with me closer than ever.
And the SLK turns his hazards on and pulls over, stops, than moves up along the side of the road and pulls into a side street.
And, so, the 190E, for a short period, remembers it's heritage and is victorious.
I'm in disbelief that my low skill level and humble car allowed me to beat a much newer, and faster, car. But it was a clear win by Touge battle rules, and the other driver acknowledged it.

in your title it says slk320 and then in your novel it says 230..which one is it? 320 would be a much more significant defeat..i'm surprised even if it was a 230

damn, you're crazy.
You probably couldn't beat him on the freeway or straightline. You merely kept up with him (which is still good)...he only stopped cuz it was getting out of hand and he was freakin' out or something heh.

I won, if you go by Japanese touge rules. If you gain signifigant ground, you win, if he leaves you behind, you lose.
Oh, and I'm not sure which it was. How can you distinguish a 320 and a 230? It was the small one with the convertible hardtop. (I'm pretty sure) And I'm pretty positive it was a KOMPRESSOR, i've never seen one around here that wasn't. Hell, my aunt drives a KOMPRESSOR.
I think the reason I was able to do it is because I had better racing techniques. He was clearly taking a line too, but it sucked. I was using a Late Apex technique that allowed me to exit at higher speeds.
I guess it's now about time to start doing some real mods on my car. A whole new suspension setup is #1 on my list, along with bucket seats and harnesses. Tweak some more power out of the engine, and then...turbo.

:werd:. not about the story itself, but the whole touge bit; the SLK probably thought you had lost control and were about to slam into his rear

Naw, I was hardly off angle at all, it would be very hard to tell from outside the car.

I can belive that the 190 would beat the SLK 230... 190 was more of a race machine.
must be a monster under the hood of that 86... err.. 85. :)

Lol, you, 118 if I recall correctly!
But, as was said, raw power is not what matters in a Touge race. It's handling. And the 190E, while less powerful, has the same chassis and suspension setup as a bona fide DTM racing car. It takes the corners pretty damn well.
But, still, this car is really just a daily driver. I'm just trying to figure out what to get for my "fun" car. I'm considering an S14(2nd gen. 240SX), (great overall, but hard to find), a 2nd gen RX-7 (good and cheap, but rotaries can be trouble), a GC series Impreza (01 and before), (also hard to find at a good price), or a 350Z, (pricey (for me), but an awesome car, and they'll be more affordable once they start coming off lease at the end of the year.)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
ok I am done laughing...
Here is a "how to" on how to disntinguish between SLK 230 and 320..
230 - WIll only beat you by 100 car length
320 - Will waist you so bad you won't remmember what road you are on ;)
See.. that was easy.
You people crack me up... hahahahaha
My SLK 320 raced against a 911 (996) and Boxster S in the twisties and I beat the Boxster, but Carrera came in first... we were all pretty close together. (I did lower mine and had bigger wheels and tires)
But in all seriosuness, the guy was either not racing you, not trying very hard or was jsut afraid of some punk kid who was aiming at his tale all the time... after all he had the newer, nicer and more expensive car, so he was more afraid of you hitting him ;)

It was defenitely a 230. How do I know? I saw him yesterday!!!!!! I was on the freeway in an area not too far from where it happenned, and I'm passed by a familliar silver SLK. I look at the plate, and realize that it's the same car! I get a little faster then him (his lane slows down) and I see the driver, who's staring at my car with a horrified, "What the f......", look on his face! He then changes lanes, steps on it, and is out of there.
As for the race, like I said, this was in a very technical section, in which victory came down to driver technique. He was clearly taking a racing line, but he had no idea of where to apex, or anything like that. I, on the other hand, had been practicing, so I did. I beat him because I had a better knowledge of racing technique and of how to handle my car.

um, I test drove a 85 2.3 and it wasn't extremely fast. Maybe it was just a piece of crap. My 2.6 on the other hand :)
