Much like on the trans-Namib trip in my parental E430, another Volvo pestered me recently.
On my way into Stellenbosch (while still on 100km/h restricted country roads) a lady plus family in a black Volvo missioned her way past traffic behind me and stuck to my rear bumper.
There was one more intersection (right turn) before a 3km flat road that leads into Stellenbosch. Even the traffic ahead of me was playing along and moved aside, so halfway through the turn I buried my foot into the kickdown button.
The C280 kicked into first, chirping the inside rear tyre, and hurtled towards the redline. I could see Volvolady take the turn with much enthusiasm as well, and giving chase. Not wanting to be chicken, I kept my foot down... redline second, into third at 110km/h and the Volvo was about 6 carlengths behind me, having gained about 2 carlengths. As there was more traffic in the slow lane (and I wanted to see what she had in that Volvo) I kept my foot flat. 130, 140, the Volvo gained a little, 150, 160, now it was about 5 carlengths behind me. Shortly before third gear redline (about 170km/h) I lifted off and braked, because of traffic and the upcoming speed camera.
As we all cruised into Stellenbosch at the posted 60km/h, Volvolady weaved her way past me (after the camera) and disappeared into the distance. I saw that it was an S80, but not the model/badge.
Naturally, I gave chase. :D
By the next traffic light, I saw that it was a Volvo S80 T6. Surely she should've murdered me, but I guess I got a jump on her which she struggled to make up. My best guesstimate is that she would've reeled me in somewhere beyond 200km/h. Nonetheless, a kill is a kill. And although she looked firmly ahead when she passed me, her little son in the backseat gave me a few very disgruntled looks. It's times like these when I appreciate my car even more than I already do. :)
