View Full Version : Whick wheels to buy?

Hey,
Since y'all are way more knowledgeable about wheels than I am, I thought I would come here for some advice. Well, my S0-3 fronts are wearing out about the same time as my oem Conti's, so this may be an opportune time for some wheels.
I want to go 255's in back, but want to stay with 17's for the ride. Is the ride appreciably better with 17's? I saw some posts where people went back to 17's after being on 18's. Of course, I should do something about that gap, but that is another story...
I just haven't seen any that I am excited enough about to spend 2g's on, and that were better looking than the monoblocks, which I think look pretty cool. My 1st priority is weight/performance, with looks secondary. Well, maybe I should be honest and say that looks DO matter... I was looking at the SSR comp's, like Jeff has, but I just don't like the "spider leg" look of the spokes. How they come up from the center, then go back down to the rim. I saw different pix of the GT1's, GT3's and now notice they do that too.
(From the Wheel Experts site)
SSR pix (http://www.wheelexperts.com/wheelexperts.com-asp/wheels/ssr/line.asp)

It seems that most all of the spoker wheels (of most all of the brands) are either flat or bow out in the middle like the SSR's. I don't know if that is neccessary for fitment, or just style.
I would ideally like to get a 5 spoke wheel, deeper in the middle, coming out to the rims, not these, but similar in style to these MVR wheels:
http://www.supremepower.com/images/parts/wheels/mvr_magnum_wheel.gif
Remember those Hammer wheels that were posted a while back? Something like that I think would look cool. (Or maybe that is too pimp?)

I think that split spokes would be OK too (?), since it looks like that is what most are these days...

My other option is to just get 9.5 Monoblocks in the back and be done with it...
Anyway, thanks for reading, and open to suggestions.

would you be interested in trading your rear AMG monoblocks? I have 2 17" x 7.5" AMG et 35 (1 year old) and I'm looking for a staggered set-up for my 190E...

What size/offset/stagger (?) are you seeking?

By "Hammer," do you mean AMG Aero 1 wheels?

See:

I've always liked the Enkei LM-1 for some reason. it's got the lip and the full wheel spoke all at the same time.

comes in silver and chrome

Thanks guys,
I found the pix from the e-bay auction (now ended), these are the wheels I was talking about:

http://imagehost.vendio.com/bin/imageserver.x/00000000/vizian/DCP02657.JPG

maybe too retro?? To get something deep dish like that, I guess I would have to massively mess with the offsets?

Scott, when you say
I want MASSIVE AMG AERO I wheels, the FLAT, plate-like presence of which threatens to CUT the viewer into PIECES!!!
The image I get is of the 140 monblock 2 piece. But I think that is for 140 only (?) the one right below the Mono I, 3rd from bottom on
AMG wheels (http://www.customwheel.com/wheels/amg/)

KRK, I am thinking that I will probably hold onto my monoblock, if I do switch.

Thanks for the pix Kip, but those don't do it for me...

yeah, I thought maybe those were the wheels. 16" diameter tho'. kinda small by today's standards, but if you are still wanting to go that way, I believe Ronal still makes that design.

It sounds like you have a style that is a little more conservative/traditional than mine. No problem, I'll give it a try.

I posted up a bunch of stuff for Elvir. It sounds like you are on a budget and don't want to pay a million dollars for a set of wheels :P ... neither do I. Two sites that seemed to have some nice styles for those of us who actually have to save for mods ( :P ) were Dicount Tire (you can search by size too) and Wheelmax.com (they have a Mercedes section). Here are some of my picks:

Ace Zeus:
http://www.wheelmax.com/Wheels/ace/zeus.gif

ADR M Sport:
http://www.wheelmax.com/Wheels/ADR/msport.gif

ADR Steerling (18 only):
http://www.wheelmax.com/Wheels/ADR/sterling.gif

ADR Version II (18 only):
http://www.wheelmax.com/Wheels/ADR/v2.gif

My wild pics of the day (that don't officially fill ALL of your criteria are:

Ace Allure:
http://www.wheelmax.com/Wheels/ace/allure.gif

... and ...

Voxx Scorze:
http://www.discounttiredirect.com/product/wheels/voxsco.ant.ang.jpg

... and these would look HUGE:

Voxx Rave:

Just because you're old, doesn't mean you have to get old wheels from back in the grateful dead era! lol!! JK man :D

I say go with some ///AMG wheels. Why not get some REAL AMG SL2 like the ones I have (see my sig pic). Would they even fit? I had to buy fake ones b/c real ones won't fit my car (And...well they're $$$).

That's it! I just looked, discontinued :bored: I think they were only in 16" anyway...

I must say, in my searching, I have seen some really ...uh... interesting... wheels (read - ugly)

http://www.ronalusa.com/wheels-2002/opt-images/bear/bear.jpg

I think I'll get these:p

Awww, Doc is doggin' me again... I'm not really thaaaaaat old, it just seems like it to you young pups... Yeah, those black 5 spoke wheels were from a 87 (I think?) 124

Hmmm, OK... :D

I think they (SL2's) would fit my car? Yeah, I saw those from Scott's post, they are definitely a "contenduh", but $800+....
I don't wanna sound cheeep, but I'm gonna have to love 'em before I spend that kinda $...
Which brings me to Kuhl, thanks for posting all those pix, I will check out those sites. I like the ADR Version II, but kinda plain (oh, geeee-suuuss there is no pleasing me  ) The Voxx Rave looks like it belongs on a Honda Element...
I know they have CF motorcycle wheels, how about cars? (Talk about bucks...)

Keep 'em coming, I love it!!

Oh, I can afford them alright, I just choose not to spend that kind of money on wheels... :D
Hell, save 2g's for (not buying) wheels, 2 g's for (not buying)comand, get 3g's for my old Legend, and I'm almost 1/2 way to getting that Mini for a daily driver :P

I think almost all of those looked kinda ricey, except for like one pair. Have you thought about MAE's? Those are tight.

I think on one of the sites (TWS?) I saw some MAE's that looked cool. I have looked at so many wheels at this point, I'm driving myself crazy

I do need to get something soon though...
Thanks for the info.

get some JDM wheels, do a custom setup. Check out the ssr formula mesh, do black mesh and polished lip. I think they even have application for benz with really aggressive offset.

Hey, does anyone know where I could actually see some SSR GT3's in real life in the SF Bay area?
No monoblocks avail in 17 X 9, so that option is out. It looks like all or nothing at this point. I'm so sick of looking, and since I haven't seen anything better than the monoblocks that I just have to have, heading more to the nothing side... :bored:

Here is another old skool type wheel I like:

Last seen on a Ferarri 288GTO, but apparently still available.

19" MVR on my W202 once upon a time :D

It was a custom fitment, as MVR usually has BMW-only apps.

Cool man, thanks for the pic!

I just called a place in GA (SL Competition) that has Speedline wheels. The 2311 that I posted is about $2400 a set, not entirely out of the ballpark. He would have to get back with me on the fitment. He didn't exactly sound like the sharpest knife in the drawer either...

how about a custom drilled wheel, like some advan RGs., volk te37s, etc. that would be sick on a black car.

Hey thanks 714. I'm not a real fan of the webbed wheels, but the Volk is pretty cool. This guys site ( a personal racer, not a store) says that his 17 X 9.5's are 17 lbs... wow...
(More below)

http://www.wincom.net/trog/newimages/volk1.jpg

So I called this place SL Comp in GA, since they have Speedline wheels. The guy who answered was fairly unintelligible, but I finally got out of him that they had the 2311's (pic posted above) in SL sizes (8.5 and 10" wide) but offset is 20...grrrr

I thought these were kinda cool... Anybody know anything about the brand "Blitz"?
Blitz Type 03 comes in 17 X 9 too... This size is $567.

No, problem glad i could help.

Blitz are some crazy wheels too i was about to get them before i got my brabus wheels. They are up there with volks and advan and all them crazy japanese companies. Check out the blitz sc430 yet?? twin turbo beast, its somewhere on the net.

Yeah those volk te37s are hella light, i was able to pick up my friends 18s with tires now problem with one hand, even there multipiece wheels are light, the 18in GTCs weigh about 20lbs with out tires, that a 3 piece wheel.

The only real disadvantage of getting these wheels are that they bent really easy especially when your driving THE GERMAN TANK, you know??? So i would recommend not getting anything bigger then 17s so you'll have a alot of tire to cushion the wheel.

if you know somebody from Japan let me know and maybe you could help me and you land us some really cheap wheels over there. I've been checking it out over there and their market is flooded with wheels that people pay and arm and leg for over here. All i need is a solid connection and am in.

Blitz or Volk or both? The Blitz look less than robust, but the Volk look OK. I like that they come in 17", my original intent.

Hmmm, I know some Japanese folks, but they are over here. I'll see what I can do...

I saw Brabus mono 6 reps last night, I must say that I am warming to that design... Or it could just be that I really don't know wtf I wanna do at this point
