Is it possible to "beef-up" the alternator on my V8 W124?

check to see if it is the same part number as the same model year s class.

I know a member on mercedesshop used the alternator form either an early to mid 90's S class, which he said worked. Why not do a search on Alternator upgrade on mercedesshop. You should probably find the post telling which car he used the laternator from. I think it was 120 amp vs the stock alternator int he w124.

Yes: replace it.

Per my mercedesshop.com bi-Xenon/HID discussion with Neil V. (et al.), I have learned that it is advisable (especially with hard-core ICE) to use a 143-Amp or 150-Amp alternator (buy a used one from Silver Star Recycling in Sacramento).

Also, be sure to install a new regulator assembly (ask for BOSCH equivalent).

143-amp alternator: MBZ Part # 009.154.56.02
150-amp alternator: MBZ Part # 010.154.71.02 (plastic vent-scoop)

Regulator assembly MBZ Part # 002.154.92.06

ONLY run a used alternator with a *non-melted* plastic center-bearing race!
