What: 2004 Ferrari Challenge
When: March 20th or 21 depending on when people can go/race schedule
Where: Sears Point/Infineon Raceway in Sonoma
Skrilla?: $20 for one day tickets, or if you're cool like me $30 for two day tickets
But....: No excuses, and don't worry, I'll be TiVoing Sebring!
Why? Aside from the cars and the racing, Infineon's one of the most beautiful tracks in the nation, and there's always plenty to see/do. Also, their race/gift shop is one big playground and has all the car porn that you could want. If you've never seen a road race in person, it is a sight to behold. I'd like to see alot of first timers come out to this event (ummm, that would be almost everyone here right?;)).
Also, the drive up is gorgeous, and a group run up would also be something to consider.
Please respond to this thread if you'd like to come, and we'll work out final details as the date gets closer.
It’s a chance for race fans to view some of the most exotic sports cars in the world when the Ferrari Challenge graces the road course at Infineon Raceway for the second consecutive year in 2004. The Ferrari Challenge debuted in the Sonoma Valley in 2003, with Doug Peterson taking a clean sweep. He was the top qualifier and captured both main events during the race weekend. All competitors compete in specially built racing versions of the Ferrari 360 Modena. More than 30 Ferrari 360 Modenas made up the field in 2003, and a similar turnout is expected in 2004, including defending champion Jim Kenton of Washington. The season-long schedule featured seven events in the United States and Canada in 2003.
The Shell Ferrari/Maserati Historic Challenge series will be part of this weekend as well, bringing some of the rarest and most exciting old Ferrari and Maserati and pre-war Alfa Romeo races cars back as well. Class winners in 2003 included such rarely seen cars as Peter Giddings’ Alfa Romeo 8C35, once raced by Tazio Nuvolari, local driver Tom Price, who drove both a Maserati 200 SI and a Ferrari 250 GTO, David Love’s Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, Chuck Wegner’s 196 SP, Ferrari’s first-ever rear-engined sports racer, and Tom Hollfelder’s 512 M from the 1970s. All these and similar historic racers are expected to return for the 2004 weekend, second in the five-race Shell Historic schedule.
Most would assume that such rare and valuable cars would only have a place in a museum, but through this well-organized event they can be experienced in the environment they were designed for – the race track. This series permits owners of historic Ferrari racecars, as well as racing Maseratis and pre-war Alfa Romeos of the Scuderia Ferrari. No replicas or reproductions are permitted.
