my friends dad picked up a 996 turbo a few months ago (2002) and i got a chance to drive it last night. the car had 1500miles on it and was a 6sp manual.
INTERIOR
the car is beautiful, as i sat in the car the sport seats hold you very well, the steering wheel is very thin, and needs to be bigger imho. (the xenon lights were great too)
SOUND
the sound of the engine is fantastic blips in the throttle evoke the "usuall" porsche emotion ;)
now on to the drive....
DRIVE FEEL
The clutch is very numb, and theres too much "dead space" after the catch point, i wasnt pleased with that
the shifter is like rowing a boat the throws are light and long :(
POWER
there is alot of power as expected its not crazy low end, but keep it above 3k and you have power, 3rd gear has almost as much pull as my 2nd.
FEEL....the car has stock everything so keep that in mind.
I felt like i was driving a bus, the car dosent feel very nimble and you cant just point the car, you have to constantly give it feelback with throttle, brakes, steering.
the suspension is very soft, i didnt feel connected to the road at all. The car understeers so you have to be very smooth with steering inputs or it just pushes more.
brakes are amazing, even though it had started to lightly drizzle about 30mins after i started driving the car., but there is some brake dive, not enough to upset the car.
As you can see im not impressed at all, i let my friends dad drive my m coupe as well and he was reluctant to admit he preferred the way my car drove, as its much lighter more nimble and responsive but he preferred the power and panache a $130,000 sport car brings. he enjoyed driving my car and said "its like a go kart! I was dissapointed that the car i drooled over at stoplights for years let me down, imo the car is over hyped, and i would take my coupe over a stock turbo unless i had a date ;) my car is just more fun to drive. i was let down by what i thought was an amazing beast, ill keep my little pocket rocket.

damn DTM, I am very impressed with a 996TT, you must think the regular 911's are horrible....The thing that amazes me about the car is the fact that at 130 MPH, the car sticks around a turn better than anything I have ever driven, and at +150MPH, 6th gear will pull as hard as third~~~!!!

harris i agree its a faster car, but not as crazy as i thought it would be. i didnt even use 5 or 6 gear. so i have no idea what the higher gears are like. but compared to my m coupe its not near as nimble.

rear engine cars are strange to drive IMO.. feels weird in high speed turns compared to fronts or mid. Just got to get use to it.. but for sure the lighter the car the more nimble it feels...

I like it. :D
Rock solid at 120mph - it's in a whole different category than the M cars, IMO, besides the beast of the M5. Supecar territory. :D

DTM,
I just think that you have mabye slightly higher standards....a $130K super car is not priced at that price for no reason...What i would do to just even test drive a car like that, not to mention own one....When i was in the porsche parking lot....looking at the tires, and how wide that SH!T is, there is not way that u would not be able to keep that car straight on a hightway...even at over 120mph

have you guys driven an m5? :( another dissapointment, its not that fast. keep in mind my daily driver is faster then ANY other production bmw ever in the us. it is more nimble then a z8, faster then an m5, embarreses an m3. i was just let down that my car with 10k in tuning would be a better car then 130 porsche, and i love porsches, the 993 is the best porsche ever imho (and many other porsche lovers) yes blasting at 130-180 all day the tt would be a better car then mine, but for me how i drive i would take my little rocket over the porsche any day. ive even driven a boxster s and it felt much more nimble then the porsche. yet to drive a 996 regular more then a few 100ft.

This is the first time I hear someone call 996TT a "bus". But then, you also called M3 a "pig" so you are hard to please. heheh. DTM, if we get to meet next time, it would be really cool if you can give me a ride in your car... I've never ride in a M Coupe before and just curious how "nimble" the car is, especially I'm very curious to find out how superior it is over a Porsche... I guess the only way to find out is get a ride in it. Thanks! :) (If it's too much trouble then don't worry about it. I'm just curious).

My buddy just put a deposit on one. He was wavering between the GT3 and a CL55. Some guys have all the luck, huh? He did work his ass off in school though. Maybe I should've studied harder.

Make sure he shells out the small change ( only $8100.00 ) to get the ceramic brakes;
they are more than worth it.
And no sunroof, please.

It can't be as bad as you say can it?? You make it sound like the car is crap or something...

i was really let down by it. car isnt everything it should be imo, its way too soft (granted im running very stiff springs on my coupe, its even softer then stock m springs) and the car is big

You know, I asked him about the ceramic brakes. He said 8k was a lot of money when "regular" Porsche brakes are already pretty badass. And, in his own words, he drives "like a grandpa." I remember how he used to baby his E36 M3 with Hamann EVERYTHING.

We got a guy like this here. Driving a black W210. We don't understand though, he still gets the most tickets. OH and also, he won't stop modding. :P :D

That's what I used to think about his M3. Which I hear he's selling. Somebody's going to get the deal of their life, this is a car that he stopped modding because he "ran out of things to do to it." Anyway, it won't be the first time a six figure supercar languishes in the hands of a conservative owner.
