As the sun begins to set over the black tarmac of the makeshift track, you cannot help but recall the day’s events.

Tires squealing as cars pitch left and right on the edge of their handling abilities, the sounds of ratchets and wrenches as adjustments are hastily made between runs, flashes of orange as cones get bumped as a drivers get a little too close. There’s no uniformed pit crew in sight, nary a television camera documenting the action, and no commercialized winner’s circle with umbrella girls and champagne showers. No multi-million factory-backed race teams fighting for a manufacturer’s championship, no politics dictated by upper echelon team owners. This is a world of people like you and me. People who have normal weekday jobs, and do this on weekends out of their own pocket, their own passion. People who even drive their own cars to the track instead of having it trailered in, and bring a cooler of food and drinks as there isn’t a catering table under a team tent in sight. You can call it grassroots, you can call it simple. But for those who are involved, you can call it life. Welcome to the world of autocrossing.

They say good things can come in small packages. This is quite true of the autocross scene, as you see mostly smaller, nimble cars like the Mazda Miata zipping around the course. And don’t be surprised if you see a Brilliant Silver C230 Kompressor coupe tearing it up as well. That is the weapon of choice of avid autocrosser Nukblazi, who I am proud to present to you as BNZsport.com’s April Ride of the Month.

The connection is not one that is automatically made, and it’s obvious to the reasons why. Mercedes-Benz’s are mostly known for their luxury and classiness, with a hint of sportiness. Perhaps that reputation was advocated by the boxy, sedate sedan offerings in the past, but Mercedes is changing that notion with their current lineup offerings. And on a local level, you have people like Nukblazi who are changing the public’s perception of the brand. While his C-coupe might look quite stock on the outside, it is what he does with it that amazes people. No pampered people-mover here – this is a car that is set up to be competitive on the autocross circuit, and that is exactly what Nukblazi does with it.

Nukblazi fell in love with the car right when he took delivery of it in February of 2002. With barely a few thousand miles on the odometer, his car experienced her first autocross while still in stock form. While it was a good learning experience for him as he got a feel of how the car performed, he sought out ways to raise the bar on the car’s performance. The car had proven to be very reliable, which is a great testament to the build quality that Mercedes-Benz is known for and gave Nukblazi less headaches and more time to focus on modifications. He ordered up a set of H&R springs and Eibach sway bars to tighten things up on the handling side, and a call to Kleemann USA resulted in a pulley upgrade as well as a lightweight aluminum flywheel. Other go-fast mods include an Unorthodox Racing 6-puck sprung hub clutch disk and a modified S4 pressure plate with increased spring rate. Needing something sticky to put that increased power to the ground, Toyo stepped up and provided some Proxes RA for the C7 wheels. Holding him in place in the cockpit as he slides around is an OMP 4-point autocross harness.

While that might not seem like an extensive modification list, the combination of the parts combined with the Nukblazi’s driving skills netted him three podium finishes last year and allowed him to typically stay in the front of the pack. He plans to upgrade his suspension even more as well as his brakes, and acquire his professional racing license this year. When those upgrades are realized and his skills even further honed, Nukblazi will be sure to tear up the autocross circuit and let everyone know that indeed, you can bring your Mercedes-Benz out onto the track.

Excellent write up. Nukblazi isn't the only one autocrossing a coupe. Mine is currently all stock except for the ATS DTM 2000 wheels and Falken Azenis Sport tires. Fourth in class last weekend.

Lynn great pics, now we just need to get Tommy to stop abusing his CRX and get his coupe out there.

speedybenz is still my hero. Hopefully by the end of this season, my suspension will be somewhat parallel to what he has done. Daniel from MRP Engineering and I had a conversation about what can be done. He is hoping to have some time later this summer or early fall to harsh out some serious junk for the coupe.

Again, Luwin this rocks!

Great write up with nice pics.

Nukblazi, do u use n e thing to prevent scuff marks when a cone hits ur car? From the pics, ur car looks prestine.

Hey oosix... I don't do anything special less try to avoid cones :)

The cones really just leave a little bit of rubber on the body that usually washes off with minimal elbow grease. If that doesn't work it buffs out with a mild compound. I found that plain out dial hand soap and warm water works just fine.

The only damage to the car is just below the left fog lamp, the front facia has some spider cracks in the paint from going head on with a cone at 55mph. I lost control and striaghtened out, right into the cone.

Aside from that it has 45k and is in great contition. A few paint chips from the HWYs but no other damage or scratches.

If anyone here is in the DC or NJ areas there are meets April 18th and 25th respectively. I will be at both.

Very cool article, way to represent the marque. ;)

:) thanks!

Funny thing I've ever seen was the difference btwn when I first show up... "That's not an Autocross car" and when I am done "I didn't think they could handle like that. Can I ride shotgun on a run?" The chair of the NASA northeast autocross chapter said after the first time he saw me run he was going to look into one. :)

Now I just need more roll fast stuff. Hopefully soon.

Honorable Mention;

Lynn brought a literary bit in the "Letters" section of GRM to my attention. A gentleman from FL was interested in Autocrossing his C230 Sport Coupe and was asking if anyone else has done it with this car.

I just wanted to share that I I sent an Email to GRM and included mention of Luwin's article and bnzsport.com!

Luwin, in the original Email I had credited you, but edited it and forgot to, but then I sent a second Email to note that you wrote this!

Hello,

A friend told me about the letter from Bruce in the "Letters" section of the May 2004 issue of GRM. Bruce is not alone. I am aware of three avid autocrossers who use the coupe, including myself. We are all members of the Internet forum MBKlasse.com (http://www.mbklasse.com). My 2002 C230 Sport Coupe was also named April Ride of the Month at http://www.bnzsport.com. Last year, I won three trophies and ranked eighth in class at the end of the year with The Motorsports Club in NY Metro.

As with Bruce, autocross was brought to my attention, and I decided to give it a try. The coupe is an outstanding vehicle to autocross with. The only drawback is the SCCA's classing of the vehicle as +2.0l forced induction motor. STi's and Evo's are hard to beat, but the fun factor due to the torquey motor, rear wheel drive, and strong handling and maneuvering capabilities of the car is surely there. My father, who turns 60 in two months, had the biggest smile I have ever seen on his face after autocrossing with my C-coupe.

A friend from the above forum, Lynn, is one of the most knowledgeable MB enthusiasts I know. He runs his 2002 C-coupe in St. Louis SCCA events in stock form. I run in the NYC/NJ area with SCCA, NASA, BWMCCA, and The Motorsports Club events. I will be running in the SCCA WDC region this year with a modified (SM) C-coupe with Kleemann overboost pulley, Kleemann/ Unorthodox racing lwt. flywheel and stage III clutch, springs, and sway bars. Another forum member, Tom, runs his 2002 magma coupe in the Florida region.

Bruce has the M111 motor C Sport Coupe; it is a great motor with a fair amount of tunability and an already rigid chassis. We recommend that he join and participate in our forum to learn more about his car and the mechanical techno-babble and to share his adventures with us.

I have attached a few pictures of our coupes in action. Photo's of Lynn's Blue coupe are by Chris Hammond of http://www.solo2.org. Photo's 3 and 4 of my silver coupe were taken by Robert Plafta. Picture 2 was hosted by Perry Aidelbaum of http://www.autox4u.com. I am not sure if Perry took the photos himself, or not.The photographer of picture 1 is unknown. The photographer of Tom's Red C230 is also unknown. It would be an honor for all of us to see them in GRM and this response printed to encourage Bruce and other C230K owners to get involved.

Best regards

Thomas Miller
