Not sure if this is the right place for this thread but I need help...

My 1990 300E has been overheating and had some odd voltage issues of late. I just spent $1000CDN yesterday replacing the belt, auto belt tensioner and viscous fan clutch and did a coolant flush, which were all recommended by my tech. 20 min later my car was overheating again and today my voltage went wonky again: my ABS light came on, my stereo flickered so I shut off the AC to reduce the draw, which helped. I replaced my altenator in October and it checks out...WHAT can I do? I am going back on monday to have them fix it, hopefuly free of charge. They cannot take out the new parts they claimed were the culprit can they? I need some firepower to come at them with, so please help :)

I have a stereo, subs and 3 amps, would a Capacitor help my voltage issues or should I upgrade altenators like RUN and others are doing/have done?

I had similar problems on my 95 W202. The voltage issues should be fixed with a capacitor and a new battery. My car kept dying every time I used the stereo and my mechanic couldn't figure out the problem, then my cousin figured out it was the battery, I changed it, got a capacitor, and that problem went away. Now my bass hits harder, no more dim lights and flickering stereo lights.

For the overheating problem, that really depends, its going to be up to a mechanic to decide that problem. Could be fans, could be radiator, or could be electronic too.

It really sucks when you mod electronic stuff in a benz. If it aint done right, like my car...all sorts of problems come up. I brought my W210 to a place that always works on bmw's and MB's and had no problem with the stereo or anything electronic.

Perhaps bring it to another mechanic if your mechanic isn't fixing the problem right. It'll cost, but at least you'll get it done right. Good luck man

sounds like symptoms of OVP prob maybe. not to sure i've never had a similar issue but I remember reading about it on 190revolution (http://www.190revolution.net) search for OVP (sorry if this is forum boasting mods). Also you might want to try some redline watter wetter in with the coolant, its good stuff helped my 190 out.

thanks for the help...taking the car back tomorrow morn and I am going to stand there and WATCH him while he works, really comforting news was given to me today about my tech being a crook  so we'll see what I can get out of them. I am definitely shopping for a new tech. I have known the owner of the shop since i was a kid so I am taking matters up with him if issues are not resolved tomorrow.

Battery
OVP (Over Voltage Protection) relay
Corroded wires

What else should I have them diagnose?

Thanks to everyone for their continued support and help :)

have them check termostat and water pump too, also your radiator may be clogged up a bit, so you may want to have that checked.

IF its the radiator, just because it was flushed does not mean it doesnt have clogging in it... after years of use,t he fluid running through it will close the passages up a bit with corrosion and such.

Ok, just to add info for all your help, my rad and cap, water pump, heater fan motor were all changed 2 yrs agp, so I doubt they are the cause. He is checking modules and switches tomorrow and I asked why the @#$% he didn't do those first then the expensive sh!t after...hmmm guess that is how dishonest people work. In any case i really want more info to help get rid of the problem because it seems as though the PO has replaced most of the expensive stuff....

Please advise....

I would go to a two battery system or add a cap.

Ok, think I am getting a cap to solve the voltage issues, now for the overheating.

As previously stated with all the repairs done by the PO and me last friday, I spent the day there as he tried to re-diagnose his incorrect initial diagnosis. 5 hrs later he tells me i need to replace the push button control unit of my ACC and that it is $880 CAD plus $100 for install..so WTF now it is a $2000 job when it could have been 1000. He said the high speed fans are not turning on when the temp sensor requires them to be on. Checked switches, relays modules and sensors and they are all good, does this diagnosis make sense? Then the #$%^&* decides that I shouldpay $195 today for all the diagnosis work done today!!???
I told him I'd consult with another tech before I'd pay (you people being the other techs :D)

Please advise, as I don't have $1000 for repairs this month and it is hot out now, so other solutions would be great :)
