My father told me that when he bought his CLK in 2000, that the dealer said he should never wax his car and that he will never need to anyway. Is that true?
If it is untrue and he can wax it, is there only a certain type of wax that is allowed? Thanks!

That would be untrue. That makes no sense.
I'm sure W420 can recommend 10 different types of wax :)
Depending on color, I hear Zymol Creme or Carbon is good!
Like Brabus said UNTRUE!!
If I ever buy a brand new car the first thing I would do is clean and wax it. The harsher stuff like paint cleaner or even polish you won't need for awhile BUT wax you definately do!
I bet the dealer also recommended using paint thinner as a cleansing agent.
Old School Myth.
It used to be that new car paint needed time to fully cure.
But with today's paint applications and the baking process used at the factory, you don't need to wait at all.
If anything, you need to remove the crap they use at the dealership when they prep your car. It's usually a heavy silicon product used to fill in the swirls.
Yah the paint on new cars are already cured the minute you pick it up from the dealer, so wax away. :D
Even when the car has been repainted, the bodyshop would probably tell you to wait 3 months or 4 months or whatever, but what I learned from Sal (of Z Bros / custom painter) while speaking with him on phone was - unlike older lacquers the new paints are catalyzed (paint cures chemically); therefore, it should be okay to wax the paint as soon as you get the car out from bodyshop... Personally, I'm still trying to be careful and avoid the "fish eye" on repainted finish, so I would wait 3-4 weeks before waxing just in case there are solvents that need to dissipate. I do maintain it with bodyshop safe glaze (3M IHG is one of them) as temporary protection during the waiting period.
I've used Meguiars Gold Class, Hi Tech Yellow wax, Mothers 3 Steps, Zaino, Klasse, Black Fire, 4Star Platinum, P21S, Souveran, Moose Wax to name a few, wait that is 10 wax Jermy was saying. hahah. All are good wax but depend on color and condition of car where one would be more suitable than the other. Some wax are cleaner wax (ex: Gold Class, Moose wax), some are pure non-cleaner wax (ex: P21S,Souveran,Zaino). Basically, if you want something you can acquire locally Meguiars & Mothers make good wax. Synthetic-Wise, Zaino is my favorite. Ease of application wise, P21S & Moose wax are my favorite. If you happen to have a lot of money and just feel like spending then Souveran is the choice. :D

Thanks guys! When my father told me this, I figured the dealer was probably making it up to make the car sound that much more amazing so my father would buy it.
