Car is running a bit rich, black smoke, very slight, on start up. Car seems to cough on its self when trying to start.. Car seems to stumble at 4,000 rmp.. I have a Powerchip in my car and before I take it to MB I would like to know if this is a "chip" problem or if MB can fix that but not unprogram my Powerchip. Plugs look good. Could this be the MAS. Suggestions. Overall car is running strong but kinda watching this. I have one month to go on Starmark and I want to load up the woes on MB's money.

I was thinking MAS. Maybe its detecting incorrectly, and spewing in more gas than needed.

Dan,

I doubt its the chip,

I never had (not a single) "cough" startup even on coldest winter (-10 F)

I would have the dealer check for any faulty code..

Have you had MAF sensor replace.
I had mine..replaced at 69,000

I dont think there is a problem.. all cars run rich on start up.. they r programmed to do that for approximatly 20-30 seconds on start ups to make sure there is no lean mixture during start up.. a lean mixture as u know is not good for a cars engine.. so to combat this all cars run super rich for a short period of time.
u could take it in and have them look at it.. but I doubt u will get any warranty if they see u have an aftermarket chip. unless u know someone there!!

when I get that smoke it is when the motor really struggles to turn over.. at times the car will pop right on.. other times it takes 7 seconds... also car has a miss at 4,000 to 6,000 rpm.. could this be a bad plug?

hmmm. if its taking that long to turn over u might have a problem.. but I doubt its with the fuel computer... how often do u have problems starting?? possibly starter.. battery? does it ever just not turn over... then if u try again it does?? there has been a problem with some of the benzs.. where the ring gear need to be lubricated with ring gear paste. dont think it affects W202's tho.. might have been the W208's.
the miss on the other hand... could maybe be a plug... but most likely a supressor (goes inbetween the spark plug and coil) sometimes those mess up and cause misses. poor transfer from coil to plug.

When I first got my car, it would take a long, long time to turn over when the engine is cold. Starts right up when it's warm, after driving for a while. Dealer first changed the fuel pressure regulator. Didn't do a thing. 2nd time I took it back & demoed the crank problem to the tech, they fixed it right. Replaced a cracked injector and spark plug for that cylinder bank. No probs with start up since.

I have the same problem with my 124. For mine it is a problem with the oil/gas ratio (richness) Aroudn the air cleaner there is an allen key hole which you can change this although it is very sensitive. Take it to the dealer and theyll do it for free if theyre nice. It may also be your valve stem seals going out since mine are out too. Good luck!
